Стр. 5 - Theological Seminary and being ordained a deacon in 1973, Nazaryan worked at the Byurakan observatory and two other scientific research institutes. He was project director in the construction design automation bureau of the Armenian State Design Institute at the time of his arrest in December of 1977. Стр. 9 - Group. Arutyunyan supported himself by working in a shoe factory until he was arrested along with other Armenian Helsinki Group members on December 23, 1977. On January 18, 1978, he was convicted of "resisting a representative of authority" (Article 218 of the Armenian Criminal Code) and sentenced to 3 years in standard regimen camp.
Стр. 5 - His trial was postponed twice and finally held a year after his arrest. (At one point during the trial, Nazaryan's defense lawyer was not allowed to enter the courtroom because the guards did not recognize him.) On December 2, 1978, Nazaryan was sentenced to 5 years in strict regimen labor camp and 2 years of internal exile under Article 65 of the Armenian Criminal Code, "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda," and Article 218, "resisting a representative of authority.
