Edward James read history at Oxford, and then did research on the archaeology of south-west Gaul in the early Middle Ages. He taught at University College Dublin between 1970 and 1978, and is currently Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, and Co-Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies, at the University of York.
