PREFACE.

THIS present volume of a Magazine so long conducted by the same Editors, and on the same principles, scarcely requires a preface.

Abundant opportunity has been afforded to judge how far the work corresponds with its design, and to what extent it is entitled to claim the continued sanction, sympathies, and contributions of that portion of the church of Christ for whom it was originally designed.

Of the great distinguishing truths of the Gospel of Christ, and of the peculiar views of the Baptist denomination, the GOSPEL HERALD has ever been the uncompromising advocate. And while the same principles, on the one hand, may have been professedly maintained in a too sectarian and narrow spirit; and, on the other, have been well-nigh ignored by the loose theology and latitudinarian tendencies of the age; we have felt it our duty and distinguished honor to hold on our way in the exhibition and defence of the truth as we have been taught it-the truth as it is in Jesus.

Our responsibility is great; and we feel that it is important, while we remain firmly at our post, to see to it that the weapons of our warfare are spiritual, and that there be nothing in our temper and conduct to incur the charge of bitterness and censoriousness in our advocacy of those great doctrinal and practical truths which ought ever to be spoken in love, and for the maintenance and preservation of which the firmest and most effectual bond is Charity.

If our principles are, as we believe, more scriptural than those of many others, it becomes us to exhibit a corresponding superiority of spirit and demeanor, deprecating the unholy feuds and contentions which too often characterise the religious controversies of the day, and produce a withering effect on the spiritual life of the churches.

Yet for the errors which are sapping the foundations of Zion, or are impairing the divine institutions of the Kingdom, we feel no tenderness; to them we would give no quarter, nor yield to any compromise with their abettors. They are plants which our Heavenly Father hath not
