THE letters contained in the following pages were hastily written at the places where they are dated, and addressed and sent to partial friends at home. The object of the writer of them, was to convey to those she loved, some share of the pleasure felt by her in looking for the first time upon foreign lands. With her friends she succeeded in doing this; how it will be with others into whose hands this book may chance to fall, they who read it can best answer. What she wrote was not intended for publication at the time it was written, and is now given to the public as it left her pen, when she believed that among only the circle of her intimate acquaintance, these impressions of what she had seen, would be read. She has been induced to allow them to be printed not from any vain desire to become known as the author of a book, but to gratify the wishes of many whose good-will she values, who have requested that her observations should be put in some convenient form. The first of the letters was dated at Liverpool soon after the author's arrival at that great commercial port; and the others followed, at such periods, and in such order as the exigencies of a traveller's life permitted. Being addressed to several persons, there is not in them that continuity of narrative, they might have possessed, had they been sent to a single correspondent; if then she sometimes turns |
