LITERARY ITEMS.

-The fiction (August) number of Scribner's Magazine has had a wonderful record for a decade This issue contains six complete short stories by Rudyard Kipling, Kenneth Grahame, Frank R. Stockton, Blanche Willis Howard, Molly Elliot Seawell, and Jesse Lynch Williams, and it appeals to many kinds of taste, for they are, respectively, a railroad story, a story of childhood, a farcical tale, a pathetic story, a fighting story, and a new-journalism story.

-The June number of the School Review is noteworthy as a National Association number. The report of the committee on College Entrance requirements, with which it opens contains seven papers, but is not especially inspiring or practical. The training of Teachers for Secondary Schools, and what should the Modern Secondary School Aim to Accomplish, are both excellent papers.

-John Muir, the author of "Mountains of California,'' and our greatest authority upon American forestry, contributes to the August Atlantic a paper on The American Forests. It is an appreciative description of the beauty and wealth of our great forests, and a plea for their preservation by the national government.

-Progress for July, the organ of the University Association, is devoted chiefly to a sketch of American Literature from its beginning to 1840 by Prof. Freeman, of the University of Wisconsin.

-Ainsworth & Co., Chicago, announce Selections from Plato for school use. Edited by Mr. H. T. Nightingale.

MILWAUKEE, WIS.

In the Lake Regions of Wisconsin, Northern Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota, along the lines of the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, are hundreds of charming localities preeminentlyfi tted for summer homes, nearly all of which are located on or near lakes which have not been fished out. These resorts range in variety from the full dress for dinner" to the flannel shirt costume for every meal. Among the list are names familiar to many of our readers as the perfection of Northern summer resorts Nearly all of the Wisconsin points of interest are within a short distance from Chicago or Milwaukee, and none of them are so far away from the "busy marts of civilization" that they cannot be reached in a few hours of travel, by frequent trains, over the finest road in the Northwest-the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway.
