TREASURY DEPARTMENT,

Second Comptroller's Office, January 3, 1848.

SIR: I have the honor to transmit, herewith, a statement containing the names of the clerks and other persons employed in this office during the year 1847, together with the time that each was actually employed, and the sums paid to each. The several persons mentioned in this statement have been usefully occupied, nor can the number be lessened without detriment to the public service. On the contrary, the great augmentation of accounts, especially of disbursing officers of the army, has recently made it my duty to apply for additional clerical force. The business, devolved by law upon this office during the past year, has been as promptly despatched as a faithful revision would permit; and I am not aware that the public interest requires the removal of any individuals, and the appointment of others in their stead.

I am, very respectfully, your obedient servant,
ALBION K. PÁRRIS,

Hon. R. J. WALKER,

Secretary of the Treasury.

Comptroller.
