4 There is a Stream, whofe gentle Flow
Supplies the City of our GoD:
Life, Love and Joy, ftill gliding through
And watʼring our divine Abode.

5 That facred Stream, thine holy Word,
That all our raging Fear controls:
Sweet Peace thy Promises afford,
And give new Strength to fainting Souls.

6 Sion enjoys her MONARCH's Love
Secure against a threat'ning Hour;
Nor can her firm Foundations move
Built on his Truth, and arm'd with Pow'r.

7 LET Sion in her KING rejoice,

Though Tyrants rage, and Kingdoms rise;
He utters his Almighty Voice,

The Nations melt, the Tumult dies.

8 The LORD of old for Jacob fought; And Jacob's GOD is ftill our Aid;

Behold the Works his Hand has wrought!
What Defolation He has made!

9 From Sea to Sea through all the Shores
He makes the Noife of Battle cease:
When from on high his Thunder roars,
He awes the trembling World to Peace.

to He breaks the Bow, He cuts the Spear;
Chariots He burns with heav'nly Flame:
Keep Silence all the Earth; and hear
The Sound and Glory of his Name!

"Be ftill; and learn that I am GOD!
"I'll be exalted o'er the Lands;
"I will be known and fear'd abroad;
"But ftill my Throne in Sion ftands."

12 O LORD of Hofts, Almighty KING!
While we so near thy Prefence dwell,
Our Faith fhall fit fecure and fing
Defiance to the Gates of Hell.

FOR a Shout of facred Joy
To GOD the Sov'reign KING!
Let ev'ry Land their Tongues employ,
And Hymns of Triumph fing.

2 JESUS, our GOD, afcends on high;
His heavenly Guards around
Attend him rifing through the Sky,
With Trumpet's joyful Sound,

3 While Angels fhout and praife their KING,
Let Mortals learn their Strains;
Let all the Earth his Honours fing;
O'er all the Earth He reigns.

Rehearse his Praife with Awe profound
Let Knowledge lead the Song,

Nor mock Him with a folemn Sound
Upon a thoughtless Tongue.

5 In Ifrael ftood his ancient Throne,
He lov'd that chofen Race;

But now he calls the World his own,
And Heathens tafle his Grace.

6 The British Islands are the LORD'S, There Abr'ham's GOD is known,

While Pow'rs and Princes, Shields and Swords Submit before his Throne.

XLVIII.

Metre i.

REAT is the LORD our GOD,
And let his Praise be great:
He makes his Churches his Abode,
His moft delightful Seat.

2 Thefe Temples of his Grace,
How beautiful they stand!
The Honours of our native Place,
And Bulwarks of our Land.

3

In Sion GoD is known

A Refuge in Distress;

How bright has his Salvation fhone
Through all her Palaces!

4 When Kings against her join'd,
And faw the LORD was there;
In wild Confufion of the Mind
They fled with trembling Fear.

5 When Navies, tall and proud,
Attempt to fpoil our Peace;
He fends his Tempeft roaring loud,
And finks them in the Seas.

6 Oft have our Fathers told,

Our Eyes have often seen,

How well our GOD fecures the Fold
Where his own Sheep have been.

In ev'ry new Diftrefs

We'll to his House repair;

We'll think upon his wondrous Grace,
And feek Deliv'rance there.

PART II.

FAR as thy Name is known
The World declares thy Praise ;

Thy Saints, O LORD, before thy Throne
Their Songs of Honour raise.

With Joy let Judah ftand

On Sion's chofen Hill;

Proclaim the Wonders of thy Hand,

And Counsels of thy Will.

Let Strangers walk around

The City where we dwell,

Compass and view thine holy Ground,

And mark the Building well.

The Orders of thy Houfe,
The Worship of thy Court;

The cheerful Songs, the folemn Vows,
And make a fair Report.

How decent and how wife!

How glorious to behold!

Beyond the Pomp that charms the Eyes.

And Rites adorn'd with Gold.

13

The GOD we worship now

Will guide us till we die;

Will be our GOD while here below,
And ours above the Sky.

Metre ii.

REAT is our GOD; with warmest Zeal O let his Name be bleft, Within the Precincts of his Hill, And City of his Rest.

2 Fair is that Hill; how wondrous fair! Imperial Sion's Seat:

There centers, Earth, thy Joy, and there
lts Measure owns compleat.

3 LORD! what our Ears long fince have known,
Our Eyes delighted trace,
Thy Love in long Succeffion fhown
To Salem's chosen Race.

4 Thrice bleft Abode! whofe ev'ry Tow'r
By THEE fupported ftands,

5

The GOD whofe wide-extended Pow'r
Th' ethereal Hoft commands.

When proftrate at thy hallow'd Shrine,
Thy Mercies Each furveys,
Tranfported with the View, we join
In Wonder, Love, and Praise.

[blocks in formation]

6 LET Sion's heav'n-devoted Mount
With Shouts of Triumph ring,
And Judah's Daughters, pleas'd, recount
The Judgments of her KING.

7 Go, walk her facred Streets along,
And let her Tow'rs be told;

With curious Eye her Bulwarks strong
And beauteous Domes behold.
