(1) The Design of the Apoftle here, is not to Thew that we may fafely con:inue in Sin; but iç is, on the contrary, to fhew that we are obliged to become the Servants of God, and to have our Fruit unto Holiness, as is manifest from this, and the following Verses. Those therefore who fan, cy that the Gotpel givęs Men a liberty to fin, are under a very great and dangerous Mistake. For the great Design thereof is to call Men ço repene of, and fortake their Sins. It commands as to deny all Ungodliness and worldly Lusts, and to practise whatever is Praiseworthy, and of good Report; all chofe Duties which are comprehended under thole extensive Words, living soberly, righteously, and godly. It requires us to ourdo che Ariftoft among the Jews, even the Scribes and Pharisees, in Righteousness; and it offers Iufficient Grace and strength to enable us to perform whaç it requires. We are not indeed under the Curse of the Law, nor bound to oblerie those burdensome Rites and Ceremonies, which the Jews were ; but we are admitted into the gracious and merciful Covenant made with Man in Christ Jelus, by Vertue whereof a sincere, and universal Obedience will be acct pied,infread of one that is absolute and perfe&t.
