[blocks in formation]

1. I CAN not call affliction sweet;

And yet 't was good to bear:
Affliction brought me to Thy feet,
And I found comfort there.

2. My wearied soul was all resign'd
To Thy most gracious will:
O had I kept that better mind,
Or been afflicted still!

3. Where are the vows which then I vow'd?
The joys which then I knew?

Those, vanished like the morning cloud;
These, like the early dew.

4. Lord, grant me grace for every day,
Whate'er my state may be,

Through life, in death, with truth to say,
"My God is all to me."

MONTGOMERY.

1. In trouble and in grief, O God,

Thy smile hath cheered my way;
And joy hath budded from each thorn
That round my footsteps lay.

2. The hours of pain have yielded good,
Which prosperous days refused;
As herbs, though scentless when entire,
Spread fragrance when they 're bruised.
3. The oak strikes deeper, as its boughs
By furious blasts are driven;

So life's tempestuous storms the more
Have fixed my heart in heaven.

4. All-gracious Lord, whate'er my lot
In other times may be,

I'll welcome still the heaviest grief
That brings me near to Thee.

1. CHRIST leads me through no darker rooms
Than He went through before:

He that into God's kingdom comes
Must enter by this door.

2. Come, Lord, when grace hath made me meet Thy blessed face to see;

For if Thy work on earth be sweet,
What must Thy glory be?

3. Then I shall end my sad complaints,
And weary, sinful days,

And join with those triumphant saints
That sing Jehovah's praise.

4. My knowledge of that life is small;
The eye of faith is dim;

792.

But 't is enough that Christ knows all,
And I shall be with Him!

1. Ir is the Lord-enthroned in light,
Whose claims are all divine,
Who has an undisputed right
To govern me and mine.

2. It is the Lord-who gives me all,
My wealth, my friends, my ease;
And of His bounties may recall
Whatever part He please.

3. It is the Lord-my covenant God-
Thrice blessed be His name;

R. BAXTER.

Whose gracious promise, sealed with blood,
Must ever be the same.

4. Can I, with hopes so firmly built,

Be sullen, or repine?

No, gracious God! take what Thou wilt

To Thee I all resign.

T. GREENE.

1. AFFLICTION is a stormy deep,

Where wave resounds to wave;

Though o'er our heads the billows roll,
We know the Lord can save.

2. When darkness, and when sorrows rose,
And pressed on every side,

The Lord hath still sustained our steps,
And still hath been our Guide.

3. Perhaps, before the morning dawn,
He will restore our peace;
For He who bade the tempest roar
Can bid the tempest cease.

4. Here will we rest, here build our hopes,
Nor murmur at His rod;

He's more to us than all the world,
Our Health, our Life, our God.

1. O God, my Refuge, hear my cries,
Behold my flowing tears;

For earth and hell my hurt devise,
And triumph in my fears.

2. O were I like some gentle dove,
And innocence had wings,
I'd fly, and make a long remove
From all these restless things.

3. Let me to some wild desert go,
And find a peaceful home,
Where storms of malice never blow,
Temptations never come.

4. God shall preserve my soul from fear,
And shield me when afraid:

Ten thousand angels must appear,
If He command their aid.

COTTON.

795.

5. I cast my burdens on the Lord,
The Lord sustains them all;
My courage rests upon His word,
That saints shall never fall.

C. M.

1. FATHER! whate'er of earthly bliss
Thy sovereign will denies,
Accepted at Thy throne of grace,
Let this petition rise.

2. "Give me a calm, a thankful heart,
From every murmur free!

3.

The blessings of Thy grace impart,
And make me live to Thee.

WATTS.

"Let the sweet hope that Thou art mine
My life and death attend;

Thy presence through my journey shine,
And crown my journey's end."

MRS. STEELE.

1. Mr God, my Father-blissful name—

O may

I call Thee mine?

May I with sweet assurance claim
A portion so divine?

2. This only can my fears control,
And bid my sorrows fly;

What harm can ever reach my soul
Beneath my Father's eye?

3. Whate'er Thy providence denies,
I calmly would resign;

For Thou art good, and just, and wise;
O bend my will to Thine.

4. Whate'er Thy sacred will ordains,
O give me strength to bear;

And let me know my Father reigns,
And trust His tender care.

MRS. STEELE.

1. O LORD! I would delight in Thee,
And on Thy care depend;
To Thee in every trouble flee,
My best, my only Friend.

2. When all created streams are dried,
Thy fullness is the same;
May I with this be satisfied,
And glory in Thy name!

3. No good in creatures can be found
But may be found in Thee;

I must have all things, and abound,
While God is God to me.

4. O Lord! I cast my care on Thee;
I triumph and adore;

Henceforth my great concern shall be
To love and please Thee more.

C. M.

1. UNSHAKEN as the sacred hill,
And fix'd as mountains be,

Firm as a rock the soul shall rest,
That leans, O Lord! on Thee.

RYLAND.

2. Not walls, nor hills, could guard so well
Old Salem's happy ground,
As those eternal arms of love,
That every saint surround.

3. Deal gently, Lord! with souls sincere,
And lead them safely on

To the bright gates of paradise,
Where Christ, their Lord is gone.

C. M.

WATTS.

1. O LORD, hadst Thou been here! but when
Is not the Saviour nigh?

His power and love were present then,
Though Lazarus needs must die.

799.
