4. I wooed ambition, climb'd the pole, And shone among the stars but fell Headlong in all my pride of soul,

Like Lucifer, from heaven to hell.

5. Heart-broken, friendless, poor, cast down,
Where shall the chief of sinners fly,
Almighty Vengeance, from Thy frown?-
Eternal Justice, from Thine eye?

6. Lo, through the gloom of guilty fears,
My faith discerns a dawn of grace;
The Sun of Righteousness appears
In Jesus' reconciling face.

7. My suffering, slain, and risen Lord,
In sore distress I turn to Thee;
I claim acceptance on Thy word;
My God! my God! forsake not me!
8. Prostrate before the mercy-seat,
I dare not, if I would, despair;
None ever perish'd at Thy feet,
And I will lie forever there.

MONTGOMERY.

[blocks in formation]

1. LORD, I am vile, conceived in sin,
And born unholy and unclean;

Sprung from the man, whose guilty fall
Corrupts the race, and taints us all.

2. Soon as we draw our infant breath,
The seeds of sin grow up for death:
Thy law demands a perfect heart-
But we're defiled in every part.

3. Great God, create my heart anew,
And form my spirit pure and true;
No outward rites can make me clean-
The leprosy lies deep within.

4. No bleeding bird, nor bleeding beast,
Nor hyssop branch, nor sprinkling priest,
Nor running brook, nor flood, nor sea,
Can wash the dismal stain away.

5. Jesus, my God, Thy blood alone
Hath power sufficient to atone :

Thy blood can make me white as snow,
No Jewish types could cleanse me so.
6. While guilt disturbs and breaks my peace,
Nor flesh nor soul hath rest or ease;
Lord, let me hear Thy pardoning voice,
And make my broken bones rejoice.

481.

Doxology. L. M.

To God, the Father-God, the Son-
And God, the Spirit-Three in One,
Be honor, praise, and glory given,
By all on earth, and all in heaven.

L. M.

1. Ar anchor laid, remote from home, Toiling I cry, "Sweet Spirit, come, Celestial breeze, no longer stay,

But swell my sails, and speed my way. 2. "Fain would I mount, fain would I glow, And loose my cable from below;

482.

But I can only spread my sail;

WATTS.

Thou, Thou must breathe the auspicious gale."

L. M.

1. Up to the fields where angels lie,

And living waters gently roll,

Fain would my thoughts leap out and fly,
But sin hangs heavy on my soul.

2. O might I once mount up and see
The glories of the eternal skies,

What little things these worlds would be,
How despicable to my eyes!

3. Had I a glance of Thee, my God,

Kingdoms and men would vanish soon;
Vanish as though I saw them not,

As a dim candle dies at noon.

4. Then they might fight, and rage, and rave,
I should perceive the noise no more
Than we can hear a shaking leaf,

While rattling thunders round us roar.
5. Great All in All, Eternal King!
Let me but view Thy lovely face,
And all my powers shall bow and sing
Thine endless grandeur and Thy grace.

[blocks in formation]

1. LIKE morning-when her early breeze
Breaks up the surface of the seas,
That, in their furrows, dark with night,
Her hand may sow the seeds of light—
2. Thy grace can send its breathings o'er,
The spirit dark and lost before;

And, freshening all its depths, prepare
For truth divine to enter there.

WATTS.

3. Till David touched his sacred lyre,
In silence lay the unbreathing wire;
But when he swept its chords along,
Then angels stooped to hear the song.
4. So sleeps the soul, till Thou, O Lord,
Shalt deign to touch its lifeless chord;
Till, waked by Thee, its breath shall rise
In music worthy of the skies.

1. LORD, how secure and blest are they,
Who feel the joys of pardoned sin!
Should storms of wrath shake earth and sea
Their minds have heaven and peace within.

2. The day glides swiftly o'er their heads,
Made up of innocence and love;
And soft and silent as the shades,

Their nightly minutes gently move.

3. Quick as their thoughts their joys come on,
But fly not half so swift away;
Their souls are ever bright as noon,
And calm as summer evenings be.

4. How oft they look to heavenly hills,

Where groves of living pleasures grow;
And longing hopes and cheerful smiles
Sits undisturbed upon their brow!

5. They scorn to seek our golden toys,
But spend the day, and share the night,
In numbering o'er the richer joys,

That heaven prepares for their delight.

WATTS.

1. O THOU, to whose all-searching sight
The darkness shineth as the light,

Search, prove my heart, it pants for Thee;
O burst these bonds, and set it free.

2. Wash out its stains, refine its dross;
Nail my affections to the cross;
Hallow each thought; let all within
Be clean, as Thou, my Lord, art clean.

3. If in this darksome wild I stray,
Be Thou my light, be Thou my way:
No foes, no violence I fear,

No fraud, while Thou, my God, art near.

4. When rising floods my soul o'erflow, When sinks my heart in waves of woeJesus, Thy timely aid impart,

And raise my head, and cheer my heart.

5. Saviour, where'er Thy steps I see,
Dauntless, untired, I follow Thee;
O, let Thy hand support me still,
And lead me to Thy holy hill.

C. WESLEY.

1. GOD of my life, through all its days
My grateful powers shall sound Thy praise,
The song shall wake with opening light,
And warble to the silent night.

2. When anxious cares would break my rest,
And griefs would tear my throbbing breast,
Thy tuneful praises, raised on high,
Shall check the murmur and the sigh.

3. When death o'er nature shall prevail,
And all its powers of language fail,

Joy through my swimming eyes shall break,
And mean the thanks I can not speak.

4. But oh! when that last conflict's o'er,
And I am chained to flesh no more,
With what glad accents shall I rise,
To join the music of the skies!

5. The cheerful tribute will I give,
Long as a deathless soul can live,
A work so sweet, a theme so high,
Demands, and crowns eternity!

[blocks in formation]

1. TREMBLING, before Thine awful throne, O Lord! in dust my sins I own: Justice and Mercy for my life

DODDRIDGE.

Contend!-0 smile, and heal the strife.
2. The Saviour smiles! upon my soul
New tides of hope tumultuous roll-
His voice proclaims my pardon found-
Seraphic transport wings the sound!
