His watch-word at the gates of death;
He enters heaven with prayer.

3 Prayer is not made on earth alone-
The Holy Spirit pleads;

And Jesus, on the eternal throne,
For sinners intercedes.

4 O thou by whom we come to God-
The Life, the Truth, the Way!
The path of prayer thyself hast trod—
Lord, teach us how to pray.

Encouragement to Prayer.

AND shall not Jesus hear

His children when they cry?
Yes-though he may awhile forbear,
He'll help them from on high.

2 His nature, truth, and love,
Engage him on their side;

When they are grieved, his bowels move; And can they be denied?

3 Then let us earnest be,

And never faint in prayer:

He loves our importunity,

And makes our cause his care.

[blocks in formation]

SING to the Lord, who loud proclaims
His various and his saving names;
Oh may they not be heard alone,
But by our sure experience known.
2 Through every age his gracious ear
Is open to his servants' prayer;

Nor can one humble soul complain, That he has sought his God in vain. 3 What unbelieving heart shall dare In whispers to suggest a fear? While still he owns his ancient name, The same his power-his love the same! 4 To thee our souls in faith arise, To thee we lift expecting eyes; We boldly through the desert tread, For God will guard, where God shall lead.

Sanctification implored.

LORD, whose love, in power excelling,
Washed the leper's stain away-
Jesus, from thy heavenly dwelling,
Hear us, help us, when we pray.

2 From the filth of vice and folly,
From infuriate passion's rage,
Evil thoughts and hopes unholy,
Heedless youth and selfish age ;-
3 From the lusts whose deep pollutions
Adam's ancient taint disclose,
From the tempter's dark intrusions,
Restless doubt and blind repose ;-
4 From the miser's cursed treasure,
From the drunkard's jest obscene,
From the world-its pomp and pleasure,
Jesus, Master, make us clean.

The Seaman's Prayer for Deliverance. WHEN through the torn sail the wild tempest is streaming,

When o'er the dark wave the red lightning is gleaming,

Nor hope lends a ray the poor seamen to cherish, We fly to our Maker- Help, Lord, or we perish' 2 O Jesus, once tossed on the breast of the billow, Aroused by the shriek of despair from thy pillow, Now seated in glory, the mariner cherish,

Who cries in his danger-' Help, Lord, or we perish.'

3 And oh, when the whirlwind of passion is raging, When hell in our heart his wild warfare is waging, Arise in thy strength, thy redeemed to cherish, Rebuke the destroyer Help, Lord, or we perish'

In Times of Distress and Danger.
O GOD, that madest earth and sky,
The darkness and the day,
Give ear to this thy family,

And help us when we pray.

2 For wide the waves of bitterness
Around our vessel roar,

And heavy grows the pilot's heart,
To view the rocky shore.

The cross our Master bore for us,
For him we fain would bear;
But mortal strength to weakness turns,
And courage to despair.

4 Then mercy on our failings, Lord,
Our sinking faith renew;

And when thy sorrows visit us,
Oh! send thy patience too.

Prayer for Zion's Increase.

SAVIOUR, visit thy plantation;
Grant us, Lord, a gracious rain;

All will come to desolation,
Unless thou return again;
Lord, revive us;

All our help must come from thee.
2 Surely once thy garden flourished;
Every part looked gay and green;
All its plants by thee were nourished;
Then how cheering was the scene!
Lord, revive us;

All our help must come from thee.
3 Keep no longer at a distance;
Shine upon us from on high,
Lest, for want of thine assistance,
Every plant should droop and die.
Lord, revive us;

All our help must come from thee.

Prayer for a Revival.

O LORD, thy work revive
In Zion's gloomy hour;
And let our dying graces live
By thy restoring power.

2 Oh, let thy chosen few

Awake to earnest prayer;
Their covenant with thee renew,
And walk in filial fear.

3 Thy Spirit then will speak,
Through lips of humble clay,

Till their proud hearts of stone shall break,
Till rebels shall obey.

4 Now lend thy gracious ear,
Now hear our humble cry;

Oh! come, and bring salvation near;
Our souls on thee rely.

6s & 5s.

The Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father in heaven,
We hallow thy name!
May thy kingdom holy
On earth be the same!
Oh give to us daily

Our portion of bread;
It is from thy bounty
That all must be fed.
2 Forgive our transgressions,
And teach us to know
That humble compassion
Which pardons each foe:
Keep us from temptation,
From weakness and sin,
And thine be the glory
Forever-Amen.

Pleasure of Communing with God. HOW sweet to leave the world awhile, And seek the presence of our Lord! Dear Saviour, on thy people smile, And come according to thy word.

2 From busy scenes we now retreat, That we may here converse with thee; O Lord, behold us at thy feet!

Let this the gate of heaven be.

3 Come, blest Redeemer, now appear;
May we by faith behold thy face!
Oh speak, that we thy voice may hear,
And let thy presence fill this place!
