His heart is made of tenderness,
His bowels melt with love.

2 Touch'd with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame;
He knows what sore temptations mean,
For he hath felt the same.

3 He in the days of feeble flesh,
Pour'd out strong cries and tears;
And in his measure feels afresh,
What every member bears.

4 He'll never quench the smoking flax,
But raise it to a flame;

The bruised reed he never breaks,

Nor scorns the meanest name.

5 Then let our humble faith address,
His mercy and his power;
We shall obtain deliv'ring grace,
In the distressing hour.

HYMN 222. L. M. [159]

JESUS, my all, to heaven is gone;
He whom I fix my hopes upon;
His track I see, and I'll pursue
The narrow way till him I view.
2 The way the holy prophets went,
The road that leads from banishment;
The King's highway of holiness,
I'll go, for all his paths are peace.
3 This is the way I long have sought
And mourn'd because I found it not;
My grief a burden long has been,
Because I was not saved from sin.

4 The more I strove against its power,
I felt its weight and guilt the more;

L

Till late I heard my Saviour say,
"Come hither, soul, I AM THE WAY."

5 Lo! glad I come, and thou, blest Lamb,
Shalt take me to thee, whose I am;
Nothing but sin have I to give,
Nothing but love shall I receive.

6 Then will I tell to sinners round,
What a dear Saviour I have found;
I'll point to thy redeeming blood,

And say,

"Behold the way to God!"

HYMN 223. C. M. [160]

MY God, my portion and my love,
My everlasting All,

I've none but thee in heaven above,
Or on this earthly ball.

2 What empty things are all the skies,
And this inferior clod!

There's nothing here deserves my joys,
There's nothing like my God.

3 In vain the bright, the burning sun,
Scatters his feeble light;

"Tis thy sweet beams create my noon-
If thou withdraw, 'tis night.

4 Were I possessor of the earth,
And call'd the stars my own,
Without thy graces and thyself,
I were a wretch undone.

5 Let others stretch their arms like seas, And grasp in all the shore;

Grant me the visits of thy face,

And I desire no more.

HYMN 224. 78. [161]

CHILDREN of the heavenly King,
As we journey let us sing;
Sing our Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.
2 We are travelling home to God,
In the way our fathers trod:
They are happy now, and we
Soon their happiness shall see.
3 O, ye banished seed, be glad,
Christ, our advocate is made;
Us to save, our flesh assumes;
Brother to our souls becomes.
4 Fear not, brethren, joyful stand
On the borders of our land;
Jesus Christ, our Father's Son,
Bids us undismay'd go on.
5 Lord! obediently we'll go,
Gladly leaving all below:
Only thou our Leader be,

And we still will follow thee!

HYMN 225. L. M. [161]

HOW do thy mercies close me round!
For ever be thy name ador'd!

I blush in all things to abound;
The servant is above his Lord!
2 Inur'd to poverty and pain,
A suff'ring life my Master led;
The Son of God, the Son of Man,
He had not where to lay his head.
3 But lo! a place he hath prepar'd
For me, whom watchful angels keep;
Yea, he himself becomes my guard;

He smooths my bed, and gives me sleep.

4 Jesus protects; my fears begone:
What can the Rock of Ages move!
Safe in thine arms I lay me down,
Thy everlasting arms of love.
5 While thou art intimately nigh,
Who, who shall violate my rest?
Sin, earth, and hell, I now defy;
I lean upon my Saviour's breast.

HYMN 226. L. M.

GOD of my life, whose gracious power, Thro' various deaths my soul hath led; Or turn'd aside the fatal hour,

Or lifted up my sinking head!

2 In all my ways thy hand I own,
Thy ruling providence I see :
Assist me still my course to run,

And still direct my paths to thee.
3 Whither, O whither should I fly!
But to my loving Saviour's breast;
Secure within thine arms to lie,

And safe beneath thy wings to rest.
4 I have no skill the snare to shun,
But thou, O Christ! my wisdom art:
I ever into ruin run,

But thou art greater than my heart. 5 Foolish, and impotent, and blind, Lead me a way I have not known; Bring me where I my heaven may find, The heaven of loving thee alone.

6 Enlarge my heart to make thee room; Enter, and in me ever stay:

The crooked then shall straight become, The darkness shall be lost in day.

HYMN 227. 10s. & 11s. [163]

THOUGH troubles assail, and dangers affright,

Though friends should all fail, and foes all unite,

Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide, The promise assures us, the Lord will provide.

2 When Satan appears to stop up our path, And fills us with fears, we triumph by faith; He cannot take from us (tho' oft he has tried) The heart-cheering promise, the Lord will provide.

3 He tells us we're weak, our hope is in vain, The good that we seek we ne'er shall obtain : But when such suggestions our graces have tried,

This answers all questions, The Lord will provide.

4 No strength of our own, nor goodness we claim;

Our trust is all thrown on Jesus' name;

In this, our strong tower, for safety we hide; The Lord is our power, the Lord will provide.

5 When life sinks apace and death is in view, The word of his grace shall comfort us through; Not fearing or doubting with Christ on our side, We hope to die shouting, The Lord will provide.

HYMN 228. L. P. M. [164] THE Lord my pasture shall prepare, And feed me with a shepherd's care;
