4. Fain would I trace the immortal way

That leads to courts of endless day,
Where the Creator stands confessed,
In His own fairest glories dressed.

[blocks in formation]

1. High in the heavens, eternal God,

Thy goodness in full glory shines;
Thy truth shall break through every cloud

That vails and darkens Thy designs. 2. Forever firm Thy justice stands,

As mountains their foundations keep;
Wise are the wonders of Thy hands;

Thy judgments are a mighty deep. 3. Thy providence is kind and large;

Both man and beast Thy bounty share;
The whole creation is Thy charge,

But saints are Thy peculiar care. 4. My God, how excellent Thy grace!

Whence all our hope and comfort springs; The sons of Adam, in distress,

Fly to the shadow of Thy wings, 5. From the provisions of Thy house

We shall be fed with sweet repast;
There
mercy

like a river flows,
And brings salvation to our taste.
6. Life, like a fountain rich and free,

Springs from the presence of my Lord,
And in Thy light our souls shall see

The glories promised in Thy word.

1. JEHOVAH reigns, His throne is high,

His robes are light and majesty;
His glory shines with beams so bright,
No mortal can sustain the sight.

2. His terrors keep the world in awe,

His justice guards His holy law,
His love reveals a smiling face,

His truth and promise seal the grace. 3. Through all His works what wisdom shines !

He baffles Satan's deep designs ;
His
power

is sovereign to fulfill The noblest counsels of His will. 4. Thus glorious, will He condescend To be

my
Father and

my

friend? Then let my songs with angels join, Heaven is secure, if God is mine.

[blocks in formation]

1. When all Thy mercies, O my God,

My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view I'm lost

In wonder, love, and praise.
2. Unnumbered comforts on my soul

Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived

From whom those comforts flowed,
3. When in the slippery path of youth

With heedless step I ran,
Thine arm, unseen, conveyed me safe,

And led me up to man.
4. Ten thousand thousand precious gifts

My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,

That tastes those gifts with joy.
5. Through every period of my life

Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And afcer death, in distant worlds,

The glorious theme renew.

6. Through all eternity, to Thee

A joyful song I'll raise :
But oh! eternity 's too short

To utter all my praise !

1. Soon as I heard

my

Father
Ye children seek my face,
My heart replied, without delay,

I'll seek my Father's face.
2. Let not Thy face be hid from me,
Nor frown

my
soul

away;
God of my life! I fly to Thee

In a distressing day.
3. Should friends and kindred, near and dear,

Leave me to want, or die;
My God would make

my
And all my need supply.
4. My fainting flesh had died with grief,

Had not my soul believed
To see Thy grace provide relief-

Nor was my hope deceived.
5. Wait on the Lord, ye trembling saints !

And keep your courage up;
He'll raise your spirit when it faints,

And far exceed your hope.

1. How rich Thy favors, God of grace!

How various and divine !
Full as the ocean they are poured,

And bright as heaven they shine. 2. He to eternal glory calls,

And leads the wondrous way
To His own palace, where He reigns
In uncreated day.

3. The songs of everlasting years

That mercy shall attend,
Which leads, through sufferings of an hour,

To joys that never end.

[blocks in formation]

1. We love Thee, Lord, and we adore;

Now is Thine arm revealed;
Thou art our strength, our heavenly tower,

Our bulwark and our shield.

2. We fly to our eternal Rock,

And find a sure defense;
His holy name our lips invoke,

And draw salvation thence.

3. When God, our leader, shines in arms,

What mortal heart can bear
The thunder of His loud alarms-

The lightning of His spear?
4. He rides upon the winged wind,

And angels in array,
In millions, wait to know His mind,

And swift as flames obey.
5. He speaks, and at His fierce rebuke

Whole armies are dismayed;
His voice, His frown, His angry look,
Strikes all their courage

dead.
6. Oft has the Lord whole nations blessed

For His own children's sake;
The powers that give His people rest

Shall of His care partake.

[blocks in formation]

1. That man, in life wherever placed,

Has happiness in store,
Who walks not in the wicked's way

Nor learns their guilty lore;

2. Nor from the seat of scornful pride

Casts forth his eyes abroad,
But with humility and awe

Still walks before his God.
3. That man shall flourish like the trees

Which by the streamlet grow,
Whose fruitful top is spread on high,

And firm the root below.
4. But he whose blossom buds in guilt

Shall to the ground be cast,
And like the rootless stubble tossed

Before the sweeping blast.
5. For God, that God the good adore,

Will give them peace and joy;
But all the hopes of wicked men

Will utterly destroy.

BURNS,

[blocks in formation]

1. How are Thy servants blest, O Lord,

How sure is their defense !
Eternal wisdom is their guide,

Their help, omnipotence.
2. In foreign realms, and lands remote,

Supported by Thy care,
Through burning climes they pass unhurt,

And breathe in tainted air.

3. When by the dreadful tempest borne

High on the broken wave,
They know Thou art not slow to hear,

Nor impotent to save.
4. The storm is laid, the winds retire,

Obedient to Thy will ;
The sea, that roars at Thy command,

At Thy command is still.
