God the Creator.

L.M.

1 THERE is a God, all nature speaks, Through earth, and air, and seas, and skies;

See! from the clouds His glory breaks, When the first beams of morning rise. 2 The rising sun, serenely bright, O'er the wide world's extended frame, Inscribes, in characters of light, His mighty Maker's glorious name. 3 Unbounded goodness, power divine, The fields and verdant meads display, And bless the hand that made them shine With varied charms, profusely gay. 4 For man and beast, here daily food In wide diffusive plenty grows; And there, for drink, the crystal flood In streams, sweet winding, gently flows. 5 But while the Lord is good to all,

3

And for His varied creatures cares,
He hears His saints who on Him call,
And sends sweet answers to their prayers.

The Seasons of the Year.

1 WITH Songs and honours sounding loud,
Address the Lord on high;

Over the heavens He spreads His cloud,
And waters veil the sky.

2 He sends His showers of blessing down
To cheer the plains below;

C.M.

He makes the grass the mountains crown,
And corn in valleys grow.

3 His steady counsels change the face
Of the declining year;

He bids the sun cut short his race,
And wintry days appear.

4 His hoary frost, His fleecy snow,
Descend and clothe the ground;
The liquid streams forbear to flow,
In icy fetters bound.

5 He sends His word, and melts the snow,
The fields no longer mourn;

He calls the warmer gales to blow,
And bids the spring return.

6. The changing wind, the flying cloud,
Obey His mighty word:

4

With songs and honours sounding loud,
Praise ye the sovereign Lord!

Bountifulness of God.

1 GOOD is the Lord, the heavenly King, Who makes the earth His care; Visits the pastures every spring,

And bids the grass appear.

2 The clouds, like rivers raised on high,
Pour out, at Thy command,
Their watery blessings from the sky,
To cheer the thirsty land.

3 The softened ridges of the field
Permit the corn to spring;

C.M.

The valleys rich provision yield,
And the poor labourers sing.
4 The little hills, on every side,
Rejoice at falling showers;

The meadows, dressed in all their pride,
Perfume the air with flowers.

5 The various months Thy goodness crowns; How bounteous are Thy ways!

5

The bleating flocks spread o'er the downs, And shepherds shout Thy praise.

The Works of God.

1 THERE'S not a tint that paints the rose, Or decks the lily fair,

C. M.

Or streaks the humblest flower that blows, But God has placed it there.

2 There's not of grass a single blade,
Or leaf of loveliest green,

Where heavenly skill is not displayed,
And heavenly wisdom seen.

3 There's not a star, whose twinkling light
Illumes the spreading earth;
There's not a cloud, or dark or bright,
But mercy gave it birth.

4 Around, beneath, below, above,
Wherever space extends,

There God displays His boundless love,
And power with mercy blends.

5 Then may our souls revere His name,
And all His praise rehearse,

6

7

Who made creation's wondrous frame,
And built the universe.

Creation and Grace.

1 THOU God of all the worlds above, Fountain of mercy and of love,

L.M.

Thy heaven of light we cannot see, But the wide earth is full of Thee. 2 Thy wisdom guides Thy vast designs, And through the whole creation shines; And, as it flies, each passing hour Speaks of Thy goodness and Thy power. 3 Each of Thy works declares Thy skill, And all perform Thy sovereign will: The smiling earth, the swelling flood, Proclaim Thee great, and wise, and good. 4 But men may these Thy wonders trace, Without the light of saving grace: O be it ours Thy love to prize

Made early to salvation wise!

Praise for Temporal Good.

1 MEET and right it is to give
Thanks to Him by whom we live :
God's free blessings are bestowed
On the evil and the good.

2 He is merciful to all,

7's.

And can hear us when we call;
Makes His sun on sinners rise;
Showers His blessings from the skies.
