And hosts of glittering seraphim,
For guilty man alone!

4 A brighter beam was spread around
Than glory's flickering flood,

When, meek and mild, the Holy Child
In Judah's temple stood.

5 From lips of eloquence and love
The truth resistless broke,

And learned doctors listening stood
Astonished while He spoke.
6 With water and the Holy Ghost
Baptized, reproving pride,
To Israel He became a guard,
A glory, and a guide.
7 He led them as a shepherd leads
His flock in pastures free;
And lived a life of love to man,
And suffered on the tree.

8 And did He bow His sacred head,
And die a death of shame ?
Let men and angels magnify
And bless His holy Name.

9 He rose again ;-0 may we rise
From sin, and Christ adore,

And dwell in peace with all mankind,
And tempt the Lord no more!

The Morning Star.

C.M.

1 VEIL your bright heads, ye twinkling stars,

In your ethereal blue;

On this low earth a Star appears
More glorious far than you.

2 His beams, eclipsed in human clay,
Are dimly seen to shine,

And pour on men a gentle ray

Of tenderness divine.

3 Come, let us view the Saviour's bed, Unnoticed and forlorn,

And press to see the lowly shed

Where heavenly love was born.

4 Sweet were the smiles that decked His face, And soft His infant eyes;

But sweeter was the matchless grace
That brought Him from the skies.

1 THE Saviour is the Sov'reign Lord,
Who rules all nature by His word;
Supreme in power, supreme in love,
To saints on earth, and saints above.
2 He is the true eternal Word,
By the angelic host adored;

Christ God and Man.

And He, the Son of man, made known
In a frail body like our own.

3 The only hope lost souls can find ;
A balm for every wounded mind;
The only name to sinners given;
The title and the way to heaven.
4 The Son of God, the Son of man,
Who was before the world began,

L.M.

Who is, and evermore shall be,
One God to all eternity.

5 To Him be honour and renown,

Who bore the cross, now wears the crown;
The King immortal, God supreme,
Of praise the everlasting theme.

Christ's Example. 7.6 double.

1 The Author of salvation

The Saviour meek and mild-
Once took a lowly station,
Became a little child.

In infancy a stranger,

How mean was His abode !
His cradle was a manger,

Himself the Son of God.

2 His earthly parents found Him
Submissive day by day;
So meek to all around Him,
So ready to obey.
No stain of sin or folly

Could ever cloud His brow;
His heart, so pure and holy,
With love would ever glow.
3 And when His foes assailed Him,
He sought but to forgive;
When to the cross they nailed Him,
He died that they might live.

O what a sweet example

To those who know His love!

129

And all who bear His image

Shall sing His praise above.

His Great Love.

1 THE Saviour who in glory reigns, Who made the earth and sea,

C.M.

Whose power unnumbered worlds sustains, Became a child like me.

2 He stooped so low that saints might rise, To dwell with Him above:

Lord, send Thy Spirit from the skies,
And grant a child Thy love.

Christ's Condescension.

1 WHEN Jesus left His heavenly throne,
And dwelt with men below,

It was His glorious work to bless,
And happiness bestow.

2 The poor and wretched claimed His aid,
Nor sought relief in vain ;

While parents owned His gracious help,
He blessed their infant train.

3 And now though Jesus reigns above,
He makes the poor His care;
Their helpless children still He feeds,
And we His goodness share.

4 Here we are taught to read that word
Which makes the foolish wise:

O may we know a Saviour's name,
And learn His worth to prize!

C.M.

Jesus Meek and Lowly.

1 JESUS Christ, the Lord and Saviour,
Once became a child like me;
O that in my whole behaviour,
He my pattern still may be !
2 All my nature is unholy,

Pride and passion dwell within ;
But the Lord was meek and lowly,
And was never known to sin.
3 While I'm often vainly trying
Some new pleasure to possess,
He was always self-denying,

Patient in His worst distress. 4 Lord, assist a feeble creature,

Guide me by Thy Word of truth;
Condescend to be my teacher
Through my childhood and my youth.

'Seen of Angels.'

1 BEYOND the glittering starry sky,
Far as th' eternal hills,

There, in the boundless world of light,
The great Redeemer dwells.

2 Legions of angels, strong and fair,
In countless armies shine;

At His right hand, with golden harps,
They offer songs divine.

C.M.

3 And whilst He stooped on earth to dwell, And suffered rude disdain,
