2 Let Jew and Gentile stop their mouths,
Without a murmuring word,
Guilty before the Lord.
To justify us now,
Is all the law can do.
For all who in Thee trust
That makes them truly just.
L.M. 1 DEEP are the wounds which sin has made;
Where shall the sinner find a cure ?
The work exceeds all nature's power. 2 Sin, like a raging fever, reigns
With fatal strength in every part;
And spreads its poison to the heart.
And is no kind physician nigh,
Ere life and hope for ever fly
And all repenting souls shall live ;
5 For in the Saviour's dying blood,
Life, health, and bliss abundant flow ;
Can ease that pain, and heal such woe. 100 Peace through Blood. C.M. 1 WHERE shall the guilty conscience go
To find a sure relief ?
A balm to ease my grief?
Release my soul from sin ?
To calm the wrath divine !
By methods of our own :
Can bring us near the throne.
C.M. 1 THERE is a fountain filled with sin,
From which all evil flows;
Source of ten thousand woes.
Ere sorrow could begin ;
Are all produced by sin.
From Jesu's side doth flow;
And sinners in that precious flood
Are washed as white as snow.
To be his greatest grief!
Shall surely find relief.
THE LAW OF GOD. 102 The Law Just and Holy. 8.7. 1 HEAR what God Himself hath spoken
(May it pierce some sinner's soul !) He who one command has broken,
He is guilty of the whole.
And must be completely met:
How can we discharge the debt! 3 Man, alas ! could never pay it,
Even if he had the will ;
Who is only prone to ill?
Issued through the broken law,
Could not find a single flaw. 5 Jesus kept the law completely ;
Paid to justice all its due ;
Ransomed sinners prove it true.
103 The Law and Christ. 7.6 double. 1 At Sinai's foot assembled,
God's ancient people stood;
To hear the voice of God.
And shrink in silent awe,
To give His holy law.
To make His glory known,
In His beloved Son.
Of peace to men below;
Though veiled in human woe.
Flows from this wondrous plan !
The law pronounced on man :
On all for whom He bled ;
THE GOSPEL OF GOD.
7's. 1 WELCOME news the gospel brings,
Welcome news from heaven above;
Tidings from the King of kings,
Tidings full of grace and love :
Truth on which the hungry feed,
Truth that makes man free indeed. 3 All this truth may reach my ear,
Yet may never touch my heart.
I've cause to fear
Begins his glorious way!
And life and light convey.
It spreads diviner light;
And gives the blind their sight. 106 Gospel Sovereignty.
C.M. 1 JESUS, the man of constant grief,
A mourner all His days ;
And turned His joy to praise :
That hath revealed Thy Son
Hath made Thy gospel known.
