Thy blessing, Lord, upon us shower,
That we may live to feel its power. 3 O may the peace that Word bestows Be with our friend where'er he
goes ! And when the storms of life are past,
May peace his spirit cheer at last! 4 In joy and grief, in praise and prayer,
In light and gloom, in bliss and care,
On him whom now we bid farewell ! 367 Death of a Scholar. 1 DEATH has been here, and borne away
A scholar from our side;
As young as we, he died.
Our days may fly as fast :
That this may be our last !
Beneath the chastening rod ;
Be ready to meet God.
Tell us that one we loved to meet
Till all these changing scenes are o'er. 2 That welcome face, that sparkling eye,
And sprightly form, must buried lie
Deep in the cold and silent gloom,
The rayless night that fills the tomb.
How near or distant is the day
To lay us in our narrow home.
How vain and fleeting is our breath ;
When life, and time, and death are past! 369 Loss of a Godly Teacher or Scholar, L. M. 1 Say, why should Christians grieve for those
Who safe arrive on Canaan's shore ?
They are not lost, but gone before. 2 Though many painful days on earth
Their fainting spirits numbered o'er,
They are not lost, but gone before. 3 Secure from every mortal care,
By sin and sorrow vexed no more,
They are not lost, but gone before.
And hear the swelling waters roar,
Have neither prayers nor tears prevailed
Our much-loved teacher to restore ?
And must we see his face no more?
Our teacher's gone, his race is run;
And radiant shines in purest white. 3 Then, though no more we hear his tongue,
Praise should attend our mournful song;
Before Meat. LORD, bless this food, and grant that we May thankful for Thy mercies be ; Teach us to know by whom we're fed ; Bless us with Christ, the living Bread. 372 After Meat.
L.M. LORD, make us thankful for our food; Bless us with faith in Jesus' blood ; With bread of life our souls supply,
That we may live with Christ on high. 373 Before Meat.
LM Be present at our table, Lord ; Be here and everywhere adored ; These mercies bless, and grant that we
May feast in Paradise with Thee. 374
After Meat. We thank Thee, Lord, for this our food, But most of all for Jesus' blood; Let manna to our souls be given, The bread of life sent down from heaven.
375 Before or After Meat. L.M.
LORD, we would praise Thy tender care,
PRAISE Him whose goodness shines below, Whose glory lights the realms above; Praise Him from whom all mercies flow, Source of eternal life and love !
To God the Father, God the Son,
May we be taught to praise the Lord,
L.M. PRAISE God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
HYMNS FOR TEACHERS' MEETINGS. 380 Willing Service.
At Jesus' feet I lay :
Abounding grace repay. 381
To every service I can pay;
To hear Thy dictates, and obey. 2 What is my being but for Thee,
Its sure support, its noblest end ?
And serve the cause of such a Friend. 3 His work my hoary age shall bless,
When youthful vigour is no more ;
382 Power Belongeth to God. L.M. 1 Now, gracious Spirit, from above
Look down and bless our work of love ;
And look to Thee for rich success.
And our poor efforts sweetly crown;
