2 When snares and griefs beset them round, He brings His promises to view,

By which His love and power are bound To help and bring them safely through. 3 In Christ they wisdom have, and strength; The Lord their righteousness provides; By Him they get to heaven at length, And all will go to death besides.

Christ's Portion.

1 THE saints Immanuel's portion are,
Redeemed by price, reclaimed by power,
His special choice and tender care,
He owns and guards them every hour.
2 He finds them in a barren land,

Beset with sins, and fears, and woes;
He leads and guides them by His hand,
And bears them safe from all their foes.

If Christ is Mine.

1 IF Christ is mine, then all is mine,
And more than angels know

Both present things and things to come,
And grace and glory too.

2 If He is mine, then though He frown
He never will forsake;

His chastisements all work for good,
And but His love bespeak.

3 If He is mine, let friends forsake,
Let earthly comforts flee ;
He, the Dispenser of all good,
Is more than these to me.

4 If He is mine, I'll fearless pass

Through death's tremendous vale;
He'll be my comfort and my stay
When heart and flesh shall fail.
5 Let Jesus tell me He is mine,
I nothing want beside ;

207

My soul shall at the fountain live,
When all the streams are dried.

The Rainbow.

6 line 7's. 1 WHEN the sun, with cheerful beams, Smiles upon a cloudy sky, Soon its aspect softened seems, And a rainbow meets the eye: While the sky remains serene, This bright arch is never seen. 2 Thus the Lord's supporting power Brightest to His saints appears When affliction's threatening hour Fills their sky with clouds and fears: He can wonders then perform,— Paint a rainbow on the storm. 3 All their graces doubly shine,

When their troubles press them sore; And the promises divine

Give them joys unknown before :

As the colours of the bow

To the cloud their brightness owe.

The Lord's Jewels.

1 WHEN sinners utter boasting words,
And glory in their shame,

C. M.

The Lord, well pleased, an ear affords
To those who fear His Name.
2 They often meet to seek His face;
And what they do or say
Is noted in His book of grace
Against another day.

3 Unnoticed now, because unknown,
A poor and suff'ring few,

He'll come to claim them for His own,
And bring them forth to view.

4 Assembled worlds will then discern
The saints alone are blest;

When wrath shall like an oven burn,
And vengeance strike the rest.

Balaam's Wish.

1 How blest the righteous are
When they resign their breath!
No wonder Balaam wished to share
In such a happy death!

2 'O let me die,' said he,

'The death the righteous do; When life is ended, let me be

Found with the faithful few!' 3 The force of truth, how great! When enemies confess

S.M.

None but the righteous, whom they hate,
A solid hope possess.

4 But Balaam's wish was vain;
His heart was insincere ;

He thirsted for unrighteous gain,

And sought a portion here.

Believers Safe.

1 As some tall rock amidst the waves The fury of the tempest braves,

L. M.

While the fierce billows, tossing high, Break at its foot, and, murm'ring, die : 2 Thus they who in the Lord confide, Though foes assault on every side, Cannot be moved or overthrown, For Jesus makes their cause His own.

[blocks in formation]

1 MARY to her Saviour's tomb Hasted at the early dawn;

7's double.

Spice she brought, and sweet perfume;
But the Lord she loved was gone.
For a while she weeping stood,
Struck with sorrow and surprise,
Shedding tears, a plenteous flood,
For her heart supplied her eyes.
2 Jesus, who is always near,

Though so often unperceived,
Came, His drooping child to cheer,
Kindly asking why she grieved:
Though at first she knew Him not,
When He called her by her name,
Then her griefs were all forgot,
For she found He was the same.

3 Grief and sighing quickly fled,

When she heard His welcome voice: Just before she thought Him dead, Now He bids her heart rejoice.

212

What a change His word can make,
Turning darkness into day!
They who weep for Jesu's sake,
He will wipe their tears away.

God's Covenant of Grace.

1 IN everything our eyes survey,
Upon this earthly ball,
Mortality and change betray
The ruins of the fall.

C.M.

2 But there's a covenant fixed and sure,
Made by the great Three-One ;
And ever firm it shall endure

When time its race has run.

Wisdom (Prov. iii.).

1 TRUE Wisdom may our souls admire,
And far before fine gold prefer;
For all the things we can desire
Are not to be compared to her.
2 While earthly things fill earthly minds,
Attracted to their native clod,
Happy is he who wisdom finds,
And holds her in the fear of God.

L.M.

7.6 double.

214 Ruth the Moabitess.
1 THERE is a priceless treasure
For all of heavenly birth,
Bestowing nobler pleasure
Than fading joys of earth;
"Tis sweet, at times, when gleaning
In God's extended field,
