And be by sweet experience taught
Thy praises, Lord, to speak!

Praise to Jesus.

1 THE countless multitude on high, Who tune their songs to Jesus' name, All merit of their own deny,

;

And Jesus' worth alone proclaim. 2 Firm on the ground of sovereign grace, They stand before Jehovah's throne The only song in that blest place Is 'Thou art worthy, Thou alone!' 3 With spotless robes of purest white, And branches of triumphal palm, They shout, with transports of delight, Heaven's ceaseless, universal psalm :4 Salvation's glory all be paid

[ocr errors]

To Him who sits upon the throne,

And to the Lamb, whose blood was shed; Thou, Thou art worthy, Thou alone!'

160

'Behold the Lamb!'

8.7 double. 1 LAMB of God, Thou now art seated High upon Thy Father's throne ; All Thy gracious work completed, All Thy mighty victory won. Every knee in heaven is bending To the Lamb for sinners slain; Every voice and harp is swelling,

[ocr errors]

Worthy is the Lamb to reign!'

2 Lamb of God, Thou soon in glory
Wilt in majesty return;

All Thy foes shall quake before Thee,
All who now despise Thee mourn :
Then Thy saints shall rise to meet Thee,
With Thee in Thy kingdom reign;
Thine the praise, and Thine the glory,
Lamb of God, for sinners slain !

161

The Lamb of God.

1 'BEHOLD the Lamb of God'
Upon this lower earth!

He spread the heavens abroad,
And gave the creatures birth :
Yet He in love came down so low
As to partake of human woe.
2 Behold the Lamb of God!'

148th.

How sinless, meek, and pure!
He shed His precious blood,
And made salvation sure:
How strong, how free His love must be,
To bind Him to the shameful tree!
3 'Behold the Lamb of God'

On that tremendous day
When He the winepress trod,
And bore the curse away!
The trembling sinner looks and lives,
And finds how freely God forgives.
4 Behold the Lamb of God'

Ascended from the grave!

162

He sheds His love abroad,

And shows His power to save: Bright crowns on His majestic brow,— Behold the mighty Victor now!

His Precious Blood.

1 THERE is a fountain filled with blood,
Drawn from Immanuel's veins;

And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see

That fountain in his day;
And O may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away!

3 Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved, to sin no more.

163

The Redeemer Praised.

1 BLESSINGS for ever on the Lamb,

Who bore the curse for wretched men !
Let angels sound His sacred name,
And every creature say-Amen!

164

SALVATION BY GRACE.

Salvation by Grace.

1 How sovereign is the love of God To Israel's favoured race!

Paid is the mighty debt they owed,
Salvation is of grace.

2 His love, without beginning, knew
Each chosen sinner's case;

165

And sent His equal Son to show
Salvation is of grace.

The Same.

1 DEATH is the wages due by sin
To Adam's fallen race;

Nor can good works a respite win ;—
Salvation is of grace.

2 In vain we strive to cleanse the soul,
And sin's dark stains erase;

God's love is not in man's control;-
Salvation is of grace.

3 All who are taught of God shall learn
Free mercy to embrace ;

And in His leadings they discern
Salvation is of grace.

4 'Tis through Immanuel's precious blood
Eternal life they trace,

And prove, in drawing near to God,
Salvation is of grace.

5 Those who are led to seek in youth
Shall surely find His face;

And sweetly learn the precious truth-
Salvation is of grace.

6 And all who realize His love

Shall reach that heavenly place,

C. M.

166

To sing eternally above-
Salvation is of grace.

The New Creation.

1 NOT all the outward forms on earth, Or rites which God has given,

Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,

Can raise a soul to heaven.
2 The sovereign will of God alone
Creates the heirs of grace;

Born in the image of His Son,
A new peculiar race.

3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
Blows on His sons in flesh,

Writes His own laws upon the mind,
And forms the man afresh.

4 Thus quickened, they awake and rise
From the long sleep of death,

On heavenly things they fix their eyes,
And praise employs their breath.

167

The Work of the Spirit.

1 THE blessed Spirit, like the wind,
Blows when and where He please;
How happy are the men who feel
The soul-enlivening breeze!

2 He moulds the sinner's mind afresh,
Subdues the power of sin;

Transforms the heart of stone to flesh,
And plants His grace within.
