Chap. v. vi. every one that dwelleth therein shall lan- | guifh, with the beats of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the fea alfo fhall be taken away.

Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another for thy people are as they that ftrive with the priest.

5 Therefore halt thou fall in the day, and the prophet alfo fhall fall with thee in the night, and I will deftroy thy mother. 6 My people are deftroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou haft rejected knowledge, I will alfo reject thee, that thou shalt be no prieft to me: feeing thou haft forgotten the law of thy God, I will alto forget thy children.

7 As they were increafed, fo they finned against me: berefore will I change their glory into shame.

8 They eat up the fin of my people, and they let their heart on their iniquity. 9 And there shall be, like people, like prieft: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

10 For they shall eat, and not have enough: they hall commit whoredom, and fhall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

11 Whoredom, and wine, and new wine, take away the heart.

12 My people afk_counfel at their ftocks, and their staff declareth unto them for the spirit of whoredoms hath caufed them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

18 They facrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incenfe upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the fhadow thereof is good therefore your daughters fhall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.

:

14 will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your fpoufes when they commit adultery for themselves are feparated with whores, and they facrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand hall fall.

Judgment denounced. 701 people, and the princes of Ifrael for their manifold fins, 15 until they repent. HEAR ye this, O priefts; and hearken, ye houfe of Ifrael; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a fnare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.

2 And the revolters are profound to make flaughter, though I bave been a rebuker of them all.

8 I know Ephraim, and Ifraelis not hid from me; for now,O Ephraim, thou committeft whoredom, and Ifrael is defiled.

4 They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God for the fpirit of whoredoms is in the midft of them, and they have not known the LORD.

5 And the pride of Ifrael doth teftify to his face: therefore shall Israel and E. phraim fall in their iniquity; Judah alfø thall fall with them.

6 They thall go with their flocks and with their herds to feek the IORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himfelf from them.

7 They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten ftrange children now hall a month devour them with their portions.

8 Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah; cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin.

9 Ephraim fhall be defolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Ifrael have I made known that which shall furely be.

10 The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

11 Ephraim is oppreffed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

12 Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the houfe of Judah as rottennefs.

13 When Ephraim faw his fickrefs, and Judah faw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Affyrian, and fent to king Jareb : yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

15 Though thou, Ifrael, play the harlot, yer let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to 14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion: Bethaven, nor wear, The LORD liveth. and as a young lion to the houfe of Ju16 For Ifrael flideth back as a back-dah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I iding heifer: now the LORD will feed will take away, and none shall retcue him. them as a lamb in a large place.

5 Then fhall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain,as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

O Ephraim, What shall I do unto thee? O Judah, What fhall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as the morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.

5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have flain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments areas the light that goeth forth.

6 For I defired mercy, and not facrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

7 But they like men have tranfgreffed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

8 Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.

9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, fo the company of priests murder in the way by confent: for they commit lewdness.

10 I have feen an horrible thing in the house of Ifrael; there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Ifrael is defiled.

10 And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face and they do not return to the LORD their God nor feek him for all this. 11 Ephraim alfo is like a filly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Affyria.

12 When they fhall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven, I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.

13 Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: deftruction unto them becaufe they have tranfgreffed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have fpoken lies against me.

14 And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they affemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me.

15 Though I have bound and ftrengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me.

16 They return, but not to the Moft High: they are like a deceitful bow : their princes fhall fall by the fword for the rage of their tongue: this ball be their derifion in the land of Egypt. CHAP. VIII. 1, 13 Deftruction is threatened for their impiety, 5 and idolatry.

2 And they confider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have befet them at bout; they are before my face.

3 They make the king glad with their wickedness and the princes with their lies. 4 They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceafeth from raifing after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened.

5 In the day of our king the princes have made him fick with bottles of wine; he ftretched out his hand with corners.
