"When I awake, I am still with thee."

Ps. cxxxix. 18.

1 My God, how endless is thy love;
Thy gifts are every evening new ;
And morning mercies from above
Gently distil, like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtains of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours:
Thy sovereign word restores the light,
And quickens all my slumbering powers.
3 I yield my powers to thy command,
To thee I consecrate my days:
Perpetual blessings from thine hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise b.

"The preparations of the heart in man are from the
Lord."-PROV. xvi. 1.

1 LORD, teach us how to pray aright,
With reverence and with fear;
Though dust and ashes in thy sight,
We may, we must draw near.

2 We perish if we cease from prayer :
O grant us power to pray;

And when to meet thee we prepare,
Lord, meet us by the way.

"Unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of
righteousness arise. "-MAL. iv. 2.

1 CHRIST, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ the true, the only light,
Sun of righteousness, arise,

Triumph o'er the shades of night :
Day-spring from on high, be near;
Day-star, in my heart appear.

[SIX 78.

2 Dark and cheerless is the morn,
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day's return,
Till thy mercy's beams I see;
Till they inward light impart,
Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

3 Visit then this soul of mine,

Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill me, Radiancy divine;

Scatter all my unbelief;

More and more thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day *.

"The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar.”

LEV. vi. 13.

1 0 THOU, who camest from above
The pure celestial fire to impart,
Kindle a flame of sacred love

On the mean altar of

my heart.

2 There let it for thy glory burn

Unquench'd, undimm'd in darkest days,
And trembling to its source return

In humble prayer and fervent praise.

3 Jesu, confirm my heart's desire,

To work, and speak, and think for thee:
Still let me guard the holy fire,
And still stir up thy gift in me :

4 Ready for all thy perfect will,
My acts of faith and love repeat;
Till death thy endless mercy seal,
And make the sacrifice complete ".

8.

"Walk before me, and be thou perfect."

GEN. xvii. 1.

1 FORTH in thy name, O Lord, I go
My daily labour to pursue;
Thee, only thee, resolved to know,
. In all I think, or speak, or do.

2 The task thy wisdom hath assign'd
O let me cheerfully fulfil;

In all my works thy presence find,
And prove thine acceptable will.

3 Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance see:
And labour on at thy command,
And offer all my works to thee.

4 Give me to bear thy easy yoke,
And every moment watch and
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to thy glorious day.

5 For thee delightfully employ

pray;

[L.M.

Whate'er thy bounteous grace hath given; And run my course with even joy,

And closely walk with thee to heaven ".

Evening Prayer.

"LIGHTEN OUR DARKNESS, WE BESEECH THEE,

O LORD."

"Abide with us; for the day is far spent."
LUKE XXIV. 29.

1 ABIDE with me: fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide:
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;

O thou, who changest not, abide with me.
3 Come not in terrors, as the King of kings;
But kind and good, with healing in thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea;
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

4 I need thy presence every passing hour:
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
5 I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless :
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:
Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

6 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the
skies;

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

"I will arise and go to my Father."
LUKE XV. 18.

Į FATHER, again in Jesus' name we meet,
And bow in penitence beneath thy feet;
Again to thee our feeble voices raise,
To sue for mercy, and to sing thy praise.
2 O we would bless thee for thy ceaseless care,
And all thy work from day to day declare :
Is not our life with hourly mercies crown'd?
Does not thine arm encircle us around?

3 Alas! unworthy of thy boundless love,
Too oft with careless feet from thee we rove;
But now, encouraged by thy voice, we come,
Returning sinners to a Father's home.

4 O by that name in whom all fulness dwells,
O by that love which every love excels,
O by that blood so freely shed for sin,
Open bless'd mercy's gate, and take us in P.

"Under his wings shalt thou trust.”
Ps. xci. 4.

1 ALL praise to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath thine own almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done :
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
To die, that this vile body may
Rise glorious at the awful day.
