2 There everlasting spring abides,
And never-withering flowers:
Death like a narrow sea divides
That heavenly land and ours.
3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dress'd in living green :
So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan roll'd between.

4 But timorous mortals start and shrink
To cross this narrow sea,

And linger shivering on the brink,
And fear to launch

away.

5 O could we make our doubts remove,
Those gloomy doubts that rise,
And see the Canaan that we love,
With unbeclouded eyes;-

6 Could we but climb where Moses stood
And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.

"In my Father's house are many mansions."
JOHN xiv. 2.

[68

[blocks in formation]

Around its glorious throne
Ten thousand saints adore
Christ, with the Father One,
And Spirit, evermore.

3 O joy all joys beyond,

To see the Lamb who died,
And count each sacred wound
In hands, and feet, and side;
To give to him the praise
Of every triumph won,
And sing through endless days
The great things he hath done.

4 Look up, ye saints of God,
Nor fear to tread below
The path your Saviour trod
Of daily toil and woe;
Wait but a little while
In uncomplaining love,
His own most gracious smile
Shall welcome you above".

one to come."-HEB. xiii. 14.

PART I

[7s. 6s.

1 BRIEF life is here our portion; brief sorrow, short

lived care;

The life that knows no ending, the tearless life, is

there.

O happy retribution: short toil, eternal rest:

For mortals and for sinners a mansion with the

bless'd.

2 And now we fight the battle, but then shall wear the crown

Of full and everlasting and passionless renown; But he, whom now we trust in, shall then be seen and known;

And they, that know and see him, shall have him for their own.

3 The morning shall awaken, the shadows shall decay, And each true-hearted servant shall shine as doth

the day:

There God, our King and Portion, in fulness of his grace,

Shall we behold for ever, and worship face to face.

PART II.

1 For thee, O dear, dear Country, mine eyes their vigils keep;

For very love, beholding thy happy name, they

weep.

The mention of thy glory is unction to the breast, And medicine in sickness, and love, and life, and rest.

2 O one, O only mansion, O Paradise of joy,

Where tears are ever banish'd, and smiles have no

alloy;

The Lamb is all thy splendour, the Crucified thy praise;

His laud and benediction thy ransom'd people raise.

3 With jasper glow thy bulwarks, thy streets with emeralds blaze;

The sardius and the topaz unite in thee their rays; Thine ageless walls are bonded with amethyst unpriced;

The saints build up its fabric, and the Corner-stone is Christ.

4 Thou hast no shore, fair ocean: thou hast no time,

bright day:

Dear fountain of refreshment to pilgrims far away. Upon the Rock of Ages they raise thy holy tower; Thine is the victor's laurel, and thine the golden dower.

PART III.

1 Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey bless'd, Beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppress'd;

I know not, O I know not what joys await us there;

What radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion, all jubilant with song,

And bright with many an angel, and all the martyr

throng;

The Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; The pastures of the blessed are deck'd in glorious

sheen.

3 There is the throne of David; and there from care released,

The shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast;

And they, who with their Leader have conquer'd in

the fight,

For ever and for ever are clad in robes of white.

GENERAL ENDING.

O sweet and blessèd country, the home of God's

elect!

O sweet and blessèd country, that eager hearts

expect!

Jesu, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest : Who art, with God the Father, and Spirit, ever

bless'd.

Amen.

Whitsuntide.

"O GOD THE HOLY GHOST, PROCEEDING FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON, HAVE MERCY UPON US."

166. "I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.”

JOEL ii. 28.

1 SPIRIT of mercy, truth, and love,
O shed thine influence from above,
And still from age to age convey
The wonders of this sacred day.

2 In every clime, by every tongue,
Be God's surpassing glory sung:
Let all the listening earth be taught
The acts our great Redeemer wrought.

3 Unfailing Comfort, heavenly Guide,
Still o'er thy holy church preside;
Still let mankind thy blessings prove;
Spirit of mercy, truth, and love a.

167.

"As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they
are the sons of God."-Roм. viii. 14.

1 COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With light and comfort from above :
Be thou our Guardian, thou our Guide;
O'er every thought and step preside.

2 The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and love thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may ne'er depart.
