The PRESENT and FUTURE Tenfes of the POTENTIAL Mode, are expreffed by the auxiliary verbs MAY, CAN, MUST, and their inflections; the IMPERFECT, by MIGHT, WOULD, COULD, SHOULD, and their inflections; and the PERFECT and PLUPERFECT, by MIGHT, WOULD, COULD, with their inflections, and HAVE.

The Subjunctive Mode has fix Tenfes, preceded by the conjunctions, If, Though,

&c.

The Infinitive Mode has three Tenfes, the Prefent, expreffed by the fign To; the Perfect, by To Have; and the Future, by About to Have.

The above auxiliary verbs are inflected throughout the modes and tenfes.

Verbs have three Perfons in each number, except in the Imperative and Infinitive Modes.

OF PARTICIPLES.

A Participle is derived from a verb, and in general, like an adjective, requires a fubftantive.

A verb has two Participles,-the Participle Prefent, ending in-ing; and the Participle Preterite, which ends regularly in -ed.

The auxiliary verbs must always he joined to the Participle Preterite, and not to the past tense of verbs.
