HYMN 29. B. 1. C. M. *

478 The triumph of Christ; or, the ruin of antichrist.

Braintree, Peterborough.

1" LIFT my banners," saith the Lord, "Where antichrist has stood; "The city of my gospel foes

"Shall be a field of blood. 2" My heart has studied just revenge, "And now the day appears, "The day of my redeem'd is come, "To wipe away their tears. 3"Quite weary is my patience grown, "And bids my furý go; "Swift as the lightning it shall move, "And be as fatal too. 4"I call for helpers, but in vain ; "Then has my gospel none? "Well, mine own arm has might enough "To crush my foes alone.. 5" Slaughter and my devouring sword "Shall walk the streets around, "Babel shall reel beneath my stroke, "And stagger to the ground." 6 Thine honours, O victorious King! Thine own right hand shall raise, While we thine awful vengeance sing, And our Deliverer praise.

Chief general of th' eternal King, And fought the battles of our God. 2-Against the dragon and his host The armies of the Lord prevail; In vain they rage, in vain they boast, Their courage sinks, their weapons fail. Down to the earth was Satan thrown, Down to the earth his legions fell; Then was the trump of triumph blown, And shook the dreadful deeps of hell. 4 Now is the hour of darkness past, Christ hath assum'd his reigning power; Behold the great accuser cast Down from the skies, to rise no more.

CHURCH MEETINGS.

PSALM 126. C. M.

482 Parma, St. Martins, Kingston.
The joy of a remarkable conversion;
or, melancholy removed.
WHEN God reveal'dhis gracious name,
And chang'd my mournful state,
My rapture seem'd a pleasing dream,
The grace appear'd so great.
2 The world beheld the glorious change,
And did thy hand confess;
My tongue broke outin unknown strains,
And sung surprising grace.
3"Great is the work,”my neighbours cry'd,

And own'd thy power divine;
"Great is the work," my heart reply'd,
"And be the glory thine.".

4 The Lord can clear the darkest skies,
Can give us day for night;
Make drops of sacred sorrow rise
To rivers of delight.

5 Let those that sow in sadness wait
Till the fair harvest come,

They shall confess their sheaves are great,
And shout the blessings home.
6 Though seed lie bury'd long in dust,
It shan't deceive their hope;
The precious grain can ne'er be lost,
For grace insures the crop.

My soul shall glory in thy grace,
While saints rejoice to hear the song.
2 Come, magnify the Lord with me,
Come, let us all exalt his name:
I sought th' eternal God, and he
Has not expos'd my hope to shame.
31 told him all my secret grief;
My secret groaning reach'd his ears;
He gave my inward pains relief,
And calin'd' the tumult of my fears.
4 To him the poor lift up their eyes,
Their faces feel the heavenly shine;
A beam of mercy from the skies
Fills them with light and joy divine.
5 His holy angels pitch their tents
Around the men that serve the Lord:
O fear and love him, all his saints,
Taste of his grace, and trust his word!
6 The wild young lions, pinch'd with pain
And hunger, roar through all the wood;
But none shall seek the Lord in vain,
Nor want supplies of real good.

PSALM 34. 1st Part. C. M. X
York, Barby.

Prayer, and praise for eminent deliverance.
ᏞᏞ
I'LL bless the Lord from day to day;
How good are all his ways!
Ye humble souls, that use to pray,
Come, help my lips to praise.
2 Sing, to the honour of his name,
How a poor sufferer cry'd;
Nor was his hope expos'd to shame,
Nor was his suit deny'd.
When threatening sorrows round me
Like the loud billows of a flood,
And endless fears arose, [stood,

41. told the Lord my sore distress,
Redoubling all my woes;
With heavy groans and tears;
He gave my sharpest torments ease,
And silenc'd all my fears.

Gloucester, Truro. Surprising deliverance. 1W HEN God restor'd our captive state,! Joy was our song,and grace our theme; 3 The grace beyond our hopes so great, That joy appear'd a painted dream. 2 The scoffer owns thy hand, and pays Unwilling honours to thy name; While we with pleasure shout thy praise, With cheerful notes thy love proclaim. 3 When we review'd our dismal fears, 'Twas hard to think they'd vanish so; With God we left our flowing tears, He makes 'our joys like rivers flow. 4 The man that in his furrow'd field His scatter'd seed with sadness leaves, Will shout to see the harvest yield A welcome load of joyful sheaves, PSALM 34. 1st Part. L. M. All Saints, Bath. God's are of the saints: or, deliverance by prayer. 1LORD, I will bless thee all my days, Thy praise shall dwell upon my tongue;

PAUSE.

5 [O sinners! come and taste his love,
Come, learn his pleasant ways;
And let your own experience prove
The sweetness of his grace.
He bids his angels pitch their tents.
Round where his children dwell;
What ills their heavenly care prevents
No earthly tongue can tell.]
[Q love the Lord, ye saints of his ;
Flis cye regards the just:
How richly blest their portion is,
Who make the Lord their trust!

PSALM 66. 2d Part. C. M. *
London, Braintree,

Praise to God for hearing prayer.
1 NOW shall my solemn vows be paid
To that Almighty Power,
Who heard the long requests I made
In my distressful hour.

2 My lips and cheerful heart prepare
To make his mercies known;
Come, ye that fear my God, and hear
The wonders he hath done.

3 When on my head huge sorrows fell,
I sought his heavenly aid;
He sav'd my sinking soul from hell,
And death's eternal shade.
4 If sin lay cover'd in my heart,
While prayer employ'di
I my tongue,
The Lord had shown me no regard,
Nor 1 his praises sung.

5 But God (his name be ever blest)
Hath set my spirit free,
Nor turn'd from him my poor request,
Nor turn'd his heart from me.

PSALM 106. 1st Part. L. M.

Wells, Green's Hundredth.

Praise to God; or, communion with saints.

1T Let songs of honour be address'd; O God the great, the ever bless'd, His mercy firm forever stands ;

Give him the thanks his love demands..

2 Who knows the wonders of thy ways?
Who shall fulfil thy boundless praise?
Blest are the souls that fear thee still,
And pay their duty to thy will.
3 Remember what thy mercy. did
For Jacob's race, thy chosen seed;
And with the same salvation bless
The meanest suppliant of thy grace.
40 I see thy tribes rejoice,
may
And aid their triumphs with my voice!
This is my glory, Lord, to be
Join'd to thy saints, and near to thee.

Are precious in our eyes;
Those ruins shall be built again,

And all that dust shall rise.
3 The Lord will raise Jerusalem,
And stand in glory there;
Nations shall bow before his name,
And kings attend with fear.

He sits a sovereign on his throne,
With pity in his eyes:

He hears the dying prisoners groan,
And sees their sighs arise.
He frees the souls condemn'd to death!
And, when his saints complain,
It shan't be said, that praying breath
Was ever spent in vain.
This shall be known when we are dead,.
And left on long record,
That ages yet unborn may read,
And trust and praise the Lord.

PSALM 72. 1st Part. L. M. X
Old 100, Eaton, Quercy.,
The kingdom of Christ..
1 GREAT God, whose universal sway
The known and unknown worlds obey,
Now give the kingdom to thy Son,
Extend his power, exalt his throne..
Thy sceptre well becomes his hands,
All heaven submits to his commands;
His justice shall avenge the poor,
And pride and rage prevail no more.
3. With power he vindicates the just,
And treads the oppressor in the dust:
His worship and his fear shall last,
Till hours, and years, and time be past..
4 As rain on meadows newly mown,.
So shall he send his influence down;
His grace on fainting souls distils,
Like heavenly dew on thirsty hills.
5 The heathen lands, that lie beneath.
The shades of overspreading death,
Revive at his first dawning light,
And deserts blossom at the sight..
6 The saints shall flourish in his days,
Drest in the robes of joy and praise;
Peace, like a river, from his throne
Shall flow to nations yet unknown

Christ's kingdom among the Gentiles.
ESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Does his successive journies run:
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, 492
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
2[Behold! the islands, with their kings,
And Europe her best tribute brings:

From north to south the princes meet,
To pay their homage at his feet.
3 There Persia, glorious to behold,
There India shines in Eastern gold;
And barbarous nations, at his word,
Submit, and bow, and own their Lord.
4 For him shall endless prayer be made,
And praises throng to crown his head;
His name, like sweet perfume, shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.

5 People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on his name.
6 Blessings abound where'er he reigns;
The prisoner leaps to loose his chains,
The weary find eternal rest,
And all the sons of want are blest.
7 [Where he displays his healing power,
Death and the curse are known no more;
In him the tribes of Adam boast
More blessings than their father lost.
& Let every creature rise, and bring
Peculiar honours to our King;
Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the long Amen.]

The personal glories and government of Christ.
LL speak the honours of my King:
His form divinely fair;
None of the sons of mortal race
May with the Lord compare.
2 Sweet is thy speech, and heavenly grace
Upon thy lips is shed:
Thy God with blessings infinite

Hath crown'd thy sacred head.
3 Gird on thy sword, victorious Prince!
Ride with majestic sway;
Thy terrors shall strike through thy foes,"
And make the world obey.
4 Thy throne, O God, forever stands :
Thy word of grace shall prave
A peaceful sceptre in thy hands,
To rule thy saints by love.

PSALM 45. 1st Part. L. M. *
Dunstan, Eaton.

The glory of Christ, and power of his gospel.
The glories of my Saviour King,
[OW be my heart inspir'd to sing
Jesus the Lord, how heavenly fair
His form! how bright his beauties are!
O'er all the sons of human race
He shines with a superior grace;
Love from his lips divinely flows,
And blessings all his state compose!
Dress thee in arms, most mighty Lord,
Gird on the terror of thy sword!
In majesty and glory ride,
With truth and meekness at thy side.
Thine anger, like a pointed dart,
Shall pierce the foes of stubborn heart;
Or words of mercy, kind and sweet,
Shall melt the rebels at thy feet.
5 Thy throne, O God, forever stands,
Grace is the sceptre in thy hands;
Thy laws and works are just and right,
Justice and grace are, thy delight.
God, thine own God hath richly shed
His oil of gladness on thy head,
And with his sacred Spirit blest
His first-born Son above the rest.

And crush the powers that dare rebel; Then shall he judge the rising dead, And send the guilty world to hell. 3 Though while he treads his glorious way, He drinks the cup of tears and blood, The sufferings of that dreadful day Shall but advance him near to God.

HYMN 50. B. 1. C. M. *
Arundel, Bray.
The song of Zacharias, and the message
of John the Baptist; or, light and
salvation by Jesus Christ.
NOW be the God of Israel bless'd,
Who makes his truth appear
His mighty hand fulfils his word,
And all the oaths he sware.
Now he bedews old David's root,
With blessings from the skies;
He makes the branch of promise grow,
The promis'd horn arise.

3 [John was the prophet of the Lord,
To go before his face;

The herald which our Saviour God
Sent to prepare his ways.

4 He makes the great salvation known,
While grace divine, and heavenly love,-
He speaks of pardon'd sins;
In its own glory shines.
5"Behold the Lamb of God," he cries,
"That takes our guilt away:
"I saw the Spirit o'er his head
"On his baptizing day.]

7" The heathen realms with Israel's land
"Shall join in sweet accord;
"And all that's born of man shall see

"He marks the path that leads to peace,
And guides our doubtful feet.'
