HYMNS.

CHARGE to keep I have,

1A A God to glorify;

S.M.

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky;

2 To serve the present age,
My calling to fulfil;

Oh, may it all my powers engage
To do my Master's will!

3 Arm me with jealous care,
As in Thy sight to live;

And oh, Thy servant, Lord, prepare
A strict account to give.

4 Help me to watch and pray,
And on Thyself rely;

2 A

Assured, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.

BIDE with me, fast falls the eventide ;

Wesley.

The darkness deepens: Lord, with me abide. IO's. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see :

O Thou who changest not, abide with me!

3 I need Thy presence ev'ry passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me!

4 I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless :

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:
Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

5 Reveal Thyself before my closing eyes,

Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies! Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

LL that I was, my sin, my guilt,

C.M.

My death, was all
my own:
All that I am I owe to Thee,
My gracious God alone.

2 The evil of my former state

Was mine, and only mine;
The good in which I now rejoice
Is Thine, and only Thine.

3 The darkness of my former state,
The bondage, -all was mine;
The light of life in which I walk,
The liberty,-is Thine.

4 Thy grace first made me feel my sin,
And taught me to believe;

Then, in believing, peace I found,
And now I live, I live.

5 All that I am e'en here on earth,
All that I hope to be-

When Jesus comes, and glory dawns,
I owe it, Lord, to Thee.

LMIGHTY Maker of my frame,
Teach me the measure of my days;
L.M. Teach me to know how frail I am,
And spend the remnant to Thy praise.

2 My days are shorter than a span;
A little point my life appears;
How frail at best is dying man!
How vain are all his hopes and fears!

3 Vain his ambition, noise, and show;

Vain are the cares which rack his mind;
He heaps up treasures mix'd with woe,

And dies and leaves them all behind.
4 O be a nobler portion mine!

My God I bow before Thy throne;
Earth's fleeting treasures I resign,
And fix my hopes on Thee alone.

5 A

ND can it be that I should gain

An interest in the Saviour's blood? 6-8's. Died He for me who caused His pain? For me who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be

That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2 'Tis mystery all! Th' Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries
To sound the depths of Love divine!
'Tis mercy all: let earth adore,
Let angel-minds inquire no more.

3 He left His Father's throne above;
(So free, so infinite His grace !)
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race;
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

6 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun,

L.M.

Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Redeem thy misspent moments past,
And live this day as if the last;
Thy talents to improve take care;
For the great day thyself prepare.

Steele.

Wesley.

3 Let all thy converse be sincere ;
Thy conscience as the noon-day clear;
For God's all-seeing eye surveys

Thy secret thoughts, thy works and ways.
4 Wake and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who, all night long, unwearied sing
High praises to th' Eternal King.

EFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations bow with sacred joy,
L.M. Know that the Lord is God alone;
He can create, and He destroy.

Bp. Ken.

2 His sovereign power, without our aid,
Made us of clay and formed us men;
And when like wandering sheep we strayed,
He brought us to His fold again.

3 We'll crowd Thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heavens our voices raise;
And earth with her ten thousand tongues
Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise.
4 Wide as the world is Thy command;
Vast as eternity Thy love;

Firm as a rock Thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

8 area,

And for my relief will surely appear;

Watts.

10.11. By prayer let me wrestle, and He will perform ; With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.

2 Though dark be the way, since He is my Guide,
'Tis mine to obey, 'tis His to provide ;

Though cisterns be broken, and creatures all fail,
The word He has spoken shall surely prevail.

3 Why should I complain of want or distress,
Temptation or pain? He told us no less :
The heirs of salvation, we know from His word,
Through much tribulation must follow their Lord.

4 Since all that I meet shall work for my good,
The bitter is sweet, the med'cine is food!
Though painful at present, 'twill cease before long,
And then, oh, how pleasant the conqueror's song!

LESS, O Lord, the opening year,
To the souls assembled here;
7's. Clothe Thy word with power Divine,
Make us willing to be Thine.

2 Shepherd of Thy blood-bought sheep,
Teach the hardened soul to weep:
Let the blind have eyes to see,
See their sins, and look to Thee.

3 Where Thou hast Thy work begun,
Give new strength the race to run:
Scatter darkness, doubts, and fears,
Wipe away the mourner's tears.

4 Bless us all, both old and young,
Call forth praise from every tongue;
Let our whole assembly prove

Thy power, Thy mercy, and Thy love.

10 BREAD of the world, in mercy broken,

P.M.

Wine of the soul, in mercy shed,
By Whom the words of life were spoken,
And in Whose death our sins are dead,

2 Look on the heart by sorrow broken,
Look on the tears by sinners shed,

And be Thy feast to us the token

That by Thy grace our souls are fed. Bp. Heber.

11 B'

7.6.

RIEF life is here our portion,
Brief sorrow, short-lived care;

The life that knows no ending,
The tearless life, is there.
