I have striven to estimate his services to science, calmly and impartially but I cannot affect to be insensible to the memories of the past-of his almost life-long friendship with my father, never shadowed by even a passing cloud; or of his early favourable notice of and unceasing benevolent regard towards myself, thoughtfully manifested in his last bequest to me of what he had most prized in life.
