'CHAPTER I.

Although Lord Brittington strictly kept his word, and did not propose immediately to the lady whom he was now more than ever determined to make his wife, he could not restrain the high spirits which his very satisfactory conversation with Frederic had inspired, and which showed themselves in a variety of ways, and, naturally enough, among the rest, in a more gay and unreserved devotion to Laura than he had ever before indulged in.

The manner in which Laura received this devotion satisfied him completely, and he freely confessed to his friend that he considered himself as the happiest man in the world. From feeling and confessing himself to be thus perfectly happy, he became gayer still: threw Reginald higher than ever into the air; laughed at his fat mother
