2 Love's redeeming work is done;
Fought the fight, the battle won:
Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
Christ has burst the gates of hell!
3 Lives again our mighty King!
Where, O death, is now thy sting?
Lo! He claims his native sky,
Grave! where is thy victory?

4 Hail! Thou Lord of earth and heaven,
Praise to Thee by all be given !
Thee we sing triumphant now;
Hail!" the resurrection"-Thou.

HYMN 84. P. M.

Christ, the believer's only hope.

1 JESU, refuge of my soul!
To thy sheltering arms I fly,
While the raging billows roll,
While the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my Saviour! hide,
"Till the storm of life be past;
Safe into the haven guide;
O receive my soul at last!
2 Other refuge have I none;
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me!
All my trust on Thee is stayed,
All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head
With the shadow of thy wing!

3 Thou, O Christ! art all I want;
More than all in Thee I find:
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint;
Heal the sick, and lead the blind!
Plenteous grace with Thee is found,-
Grace to cover all my
sin;

Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within!

HYMN 85. P. M.

Jesus, the Shepherd of his people.

1 JESUS! Shepherd of the sheep!
Powerful is thine arm to keep
All thy flocks, with safest care,
Fed in pastures large and fair.

2 Strangers they will ever flee,
Know no other guide but Thee;
Thee they follow day by day,
Fearful lest their feet should stray.

3 Those who now, estranged from Thee, Wander far in Satan's way,

Pity, Lord! and call them home,
Never more from Thee to roam.

4 Life eternal Thou dost give;
We upon thy promise live:
May we now and ever prove
Faithful to the voice we love.

HYMN 86. P. M.

Advent Hymn.

1 LAMB of God! that in the bosom
Of the Father dwellest high,
Deign to visit humble sinners
From thy rest above the sky:
God incarnate! leave thy glory,
Nor abhor the Virgin's womb;
Spread salvation like a river,
Jesus let thy kingdom come!

2 Love divine, all love excelling,
Joy of heaven to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,

All thy faithful mercies crown;
Jesus! Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,

Enter ev'ry trembling heart.

3 Shepherds did you hear him coming Whilst you kept your flocks by night? Did you see his star in heaven,

Blaze with new created light?
Haste ye Magi, come and worship,
See the orient star before!

Bring your presents gold and spices,
Blest Arabia's balmy store.

4 All ye joyous hosts of heaven,
Loudly speak your Saviour's praise;
Saints and angels, in full chorus
Your seraphic voices raise :
Come, O come, your hallelujahs

In wide-echoing songs proclaim;
Heaven and earth with joy resounding,
Praise the blest Redeemer's name.

HYMN 87. C. M.

Invitation of the Gospel.

1 LET every mortal ear attend,
And every heart rejoice;

The trumpet of the Gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.

2 Ho! all that thirst for cooling streams,
And pine away, and die,
Come ye to living waters, come
To springs that never dry.

3 O God! the treasures of thy love
Are everlasting mines;
Deep as our helpless miseries,
And boundless as our sins.

4 The blessed gates of gospel-grace
Stand open night and day;

Lord! we are come to seek supplies,
And drive our wants away.

HYMN 88. L. M.

The success of the Gospel.

1 "LETthere be light"-thus spake the Word, The Word was God, "and there was light:" Still the creative voice is heard, A day is born from every night. 2 And every night shall turn to day, While months, and years, and ages rollBut we have seen a brighter ray

Dawn on the chaos of the soul.

3 From day to day, before our eyes,
Glows and extends the work begun;
When shall the new creation rise

O'er every land beneath the sun ?
4 When in the Sabbath of his love,
Shall God from all his labours rest,
And bending from his throne above,
Again pronounce his creatures blest?

HYMN 89. P. M.

Christ, the Sun of Righteousness.

1 LIGHT of those, whose dreary dwelling
Borders on the shades of death!
Rise on us, thy love revealing,
Rise, and chase the clouds beneath.
2 Still we wait for thine appearing;
Life and joy thy beams impart;
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every meek and contrite heart.
