THE GOSPEL.

63. The Gospel a Revelation of the Love of God. *

God so loved the World, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3. 16.1 John 4. 9. Is, 53. 10. Rom. 10. 4, Ephs. 5. 27. Ps. 68. 18. John 5. 25. Rom. 7. 22.

1 That God his only Son should send
To save his foes from hell;

What heart such love can comprehend ?
What tongue its wonders tell?

2 Jesus for us poor dying men
The broken law obey'd;
His soul was offer'd for our sin,
And all our debts he paid.

3 He gives his righteousness divine
To all who in him trust;
In spotless purity they shine,
For God declares them just.

4 Now from his high and holy place
He sends his spirit down,

And richly sheds his gifts of grace
To make his gospel known.

5 The dead are quicken'd by his might,
And live to spread his praise;
His holy law is their delight,
And they observe his ways.

6 O sinner, come, whoe'er thou art,
In Jesus' name believe;

His goodness will rejoice thy heart,
And thou shalt surely live.

64. The Glad Tidings of the Gospel. Is, 7, 10. Matt. 13. 16, 17.

1 How beauteous are their feet,
Who stand on Zion's hill!

Who bring salvation on their tongues
And words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice!
How sweet the tidings are!
Zion, behold thy Saviour reigns,
Thy God will bless thee here.

3 How happy are our ears

To hear this joyful sound,

Which kings and prophets waited for
And sought, but never found.

4 How blessed are our eyes
That see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desir'd it long,
But died without the sight.

5 The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs
And deserts learn the joy.

6 Reveal, O Lord, thine arm
Thro' all the earth abroad,
That every nation may behold
Their Saviour and their God.

65. The Salvation of the Gospel.

I will rejoice in thy Salvation. Ps. 9. 14. Is.

52. 10.

1 SALVATION, O the joyful sound!
'Tis pleasure to our ears;

A sovereign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.

2. Bound in our sins, a wretched race,
We all in darkness lay;

But we arise by sovereign grace,
To see a heav'nly day.

G

3 Salvation! may its power be known
By every sinner here!

Each heart become Immanuel's throne,
And prove to him sincere!

4 Precious salvation! let it fly
The spacious earth around,
That all below, and all on high

The Saviour's praise may sound!

66. The Happiness of all who know the Gospel. *

Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound; they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance in thy Name shall they rejoice all the day, and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. Ps. 89. 15. 1 Pet. 5.7. Is.

45.25.

:

1 SWEET is the word of grace

To Adam's ruin'd race;

How blest are we who know the sound!
Wash'd in redeeming blood

We walk in peace with God,

And light, and life, and joy abound.

2 He sends his spirit down

To seal us for his own,
That we may feast upon his love:
On him we cast our care,
In all his goodness share,
And hope to see his face above.

3 The name of Christ our King
Is a perpetual spring

Of sacred joy to cheer our way:
Yes, he is our delight,

And strengthen'd by his might
Our souls shall triumph all the day.

4 Humbled whene'er we fail,
Our weakness we bewail,
Our guilt and vileness too confess;
But we obtain relief

For all our fear and grief,

In Christ our strength and righteousness.

5 O death, thou vanquish'd foe,
We need not dread thee now;
Thy conqueror is our guard and friend:
He keeps us all the way

To everlasting day,

And joys which never, never end.

67. The Gospel worthy of all Accep

tation. *

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. 1. 15. 2 Cor. 8.9. Mat. 9. 13. Luke 7. 47.

1 To this dark world of sin and woe
The anointed Saviour came,

Content his glory to forego,
And bear our sin and shame,
