therefore, we are much pleased to place in your hands, dear Reader, with our best wishes

“ May its precepts improve thee, its spirit engage,

And its sentiments soften and cheer ;
May it keep thy affections in freshness and bloom ;

Console thee, and teach thee, and guide;
Be a flower in the sunshine, a star in the gloom,

A book for the Home Fireside."

The seasons are growing so perverse, that it may not be quite out of place, even at this time of the year, to mention the “fireside,” though this volume is especially a book for the sands, and for the glens, and for the fields, and for the woods, and for the window corner, when the summer breeze is softly waving the ripe corn spread out before you; and for the seat in the arbour, when “ the flowers are blooming everywhere, and the trees are spreading a grateful shade.”

If the labours of the Grecian sage smelt of the lamp, we trust that our labours herein smell of the sweet summer ; of the garden and the grove, the hay-field and the harvest-home :-and that our work will be accepted as an offering at the Midsummer feast of Nature, which our forefathers were wont to celebrate by a solemn festival.

MIDSUMMER, 1860.
