The Teacher in his Closet. A MEDITATION AND PRAYER AT THE DAWN OF THE LORD'S DAY. O HEAVENLY FATHER! I know that Thou hast watched over me while I have slept, protecting me from all harm, and giving me refreshing rest. I thank Thee, with the cheerful heart which Thou hast given me, for these thy mercies, of which I am so unworthy, and beseech Thee to grant me, with the returning day, the light and comfort of thy Holy Spirit. O blessed Lord of the Sabbath! I hail with thankfulness and joy the return of thine own day. Let me feel that the atmosphere of heaven is around me, breathing holiness and peace, and drawing from my heart the melody of praise. Make me sensible that Thou art come nearer to my soul, and art ready to impart to me a sweet earnest of my everlasting rest. I humbly thank Thee for the removal of all temporal hindrances to my enjoyment of this day, and for the means of grace with which I am abundantly favoured. Pardon my imperfect preparation for thy blessed sabbath, and the earthliness which pervades and encumbers my spirit. Awaken me to a new and heavenly life, and grant that I may be "in the Spirit" on thine own day. Let the remembrance of my Saviour's rising as at this hour, from the grave, and the anticiVol. VI. B |
