NOTE. The Hymns for each of the Sundays between
Advent and Trinity (inclusive), as well as for Christmas-Day
Epiphany and Ash-Wednesday, may be used at any corres-
ponding service throughout the remainder of the week, ex-
cept when otherwise provided.

HYMNS.

First Sunday in Advent.

AT MORNING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

1 HARK! a voice from Heav'n is sounding ;— "CHRIST is nigh!" it seems to say; "Cast away the dreams of darkness, "O ye children of the day!"

Startled at the solemn warning,

Let the earth-bound soul arise;
CHRIST, Our Sun, the night dispersing,
Shines upon the morning skies.

Lo! the Lamb, so long expected,
Comes with pardon down from Heav'n:
Let us haste, with tears of sorrow,
One and all, to be forgiv'n.

So, when next He comes with glory,
Wrapping all the earth in fear,

May He, as our Friend and Saviour,
On the clouds of Heav'n appear!

B

Honour, glory, praise, and merit
To the FATHER and the SON,
With the Everlasting SPIRIT,
While eternal ages run.

Amen.

AT EVENING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

2 MAKER of the starry height,
Of Thy Saints, Thyself, the Light,
JESU, Saviour, LORD of all,
Hearken to Thy people's call.

When our nature fainting lay,
Crush'd by Satan's cruel sway;
Blest Physician, 'twas Thy love
Brought us healing from above.

In a lowly Virgin's womb,
Purest flesh thou didst assume;
That to GOD above might rise
An All-holy Sacrifice.

Unto heav'n exalted now,
At Thy Holy name shall bow
All that on the earth do dwell,
All in heav'n, and all in hell.

Thou Who, on the Judgment day,
Our most secret thoughts shalt weigh ;
Shield us now with pitying care,
Guard us from temptation's snare.
