AT EVENING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

44 SINNER, now thy voice upraising,
Sing aloud, in mournful strain,
Of the sorrows all-amazing,

Of the wounds and dying pain,
Which thy GOD, Himself abasing,
Meekly bore, thy peace to gain.
See thy LORD, the scourge enduring,
From its stroke thy soul to free!
See Him, by His stripes, procuring
Rescue from thy doom for thee!-
By each pang, to thee assuring
Ransom from its just decree.

Lo! to freedom He restor'd thee,
By the fetters that He wore;
From His nail-pierc'dwounds He pour'd thee
Healing for thy mortal sore:

Yea, in love so boundless tow'r thee,
For thy life, His death He bore.

And at length, His conflict ended,
See the torrent from His Side!-
Blood and Water, fitly blended;
Each a scramental tide :

One, to wash thy stains, descended,
One the Stream of Life supplied.

JESU! may each purchas'd blessing
To our souls its fruits afford;
May we, here Thy Grace possessing,
And in Heav'n our full reward,
Love and praise Thee, without ceasing,-
Thee, our loving, gracious LORD! Amen.

BEFORE THE HOLY COMMUNION. Hymn 44, "Sinner, now, &c." (See page 48.)

BEFORE THE SERMON.

45 WHEN I Survey the wondrous Cross,
On which the Prince of Glory died;
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, LORD, that I should boast,
Save in the Cross of CHRIST my GOD;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His Blood.

See! from His Head, His Hands His Feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an off" ring far too small ;
Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Amen.

AFTER THE SERMON.

46 0 THOU, Who, through this Holy Week, Did'st suffer for us all,

The sick to heal, the lost to seek,
To raise up them that fall:-

O who can comprehend the woe,
Thy Love was pleas'd to bear?
Thou Lamb of GOD, we only know
That all our hopes are there!

Thy Feet the path of suff'ring trod,
Thy Hands the vict❜ry won;-
What shall we render to our GOD,
For all that He hath done!

Thee may our tongues for ever bless;
Thee may we love alone;
And ever, in our lives, express
The image of Thine own. Amen.

BEFORE THE HOLY COMMUNION.

47 OF the Glorious Body broken,

my tongue, the myst❜ry sing;
And the Blood, all price exceeding,
Shed by our Immortal King:-
Shed, that it might be to mortals,
Life Eternal's source and spring!

Of a pure and spotless Virgin,
Born into this world below,
He as Man, with men conversing,
Dwelt, the seeds of truth to sow;
Then, with solemn rite, He closes
His career of toil and woe.
On the night of His last Supper,
Seated midst the favour'd guests,
First, the Paschal Victim eating,
He fulfils the Law's behests:
Then, to each Himself dispensing,
The true Paschal Food attests.
And to all His faithful followers,
Who this Heav'nly Food receive,
JESUS, in th' appointed Symbols,
Still His Flesh and Blood doth give:-
His true Presence, in those Tokens,
Though we see not, we believe.

Now to Him, Who, as our Ransom,
Gave His Life upon the Tree;
And Who, in this holy Myst'ry,
Gives Himself, our Food to be ;-
With the FATHER, and the SPIRIT,
Praise be giv'n eternally. Amen.

In other respects, the same as on Sunday.

Good Friday.

AT MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

48 SEE the destin'd day arise! See a willing Sacrifice!

JESUS, to redeem our loss,

Hangs upon the shameful Cross!

JESU, who, but Thou, had borne,-
Lifted on that tree of scorn,—

Every pang and bitter throe,

That could crown a life of woe?

Who, but Thou, had dar'd to drain
That o'erflowing cup of pain;
And, with tender frame, to bear
Thorns, and nails, and piercing spear?
