BEFORE THE HOLY COMMUNION.

Hymn 20, "What Star is this, &c."
(See page 22.)

BEFORE THE SERMON.

21 POOR wand'rers, banish'd from their home,
In dark and dreary shades to roam,
Without a Guide to point the way,
And lead them back to realms of day
A King beheld with pitying eye,—
That King Whose Throne is in the sky,-
And He to earth an Exile came,
Those wand'ring exiles to reclaim.

Their falt'ring footsteps see Him guide,
And strength for fainting hearts provide,
Through all their pilgrimage attend,-
Himself the Way, Himself the End.

-But heav'nly Truth can ne'er be seen
By earthly minds, or hearts unclean :
O Saviour, grant that we may win
Thy Blessing on the pure within.

To Him, Who hath our chains unbound,
All praise be sung the earth around;
O FATHER, let the world combine,
To sing the SPIRIT'S praise and Thine,

Amen.

22

AFTER THE SERMON.

LIGHT of the anxious heart,
JESU, Thy suppliants cheer;
Bid Thou the gloom of guilt depart,
And shed Thy sweetness here.

O happy he, whose breast
Thou makest Thine abode ;
Sweet Light, That with the pure wilt rest,
For they shall see their GOD.

Brightness of God above,
Unfathomable Grace,

Within our hearts implant Thy love,

And fix Thy dwelling-place.

To lowly minds reveal'd,

Our SAVIOUR, we adore;

Like tribute to the FATHER yield,

And SPIRIT, evermore.

Amen.

First Sunday after Epiphany.

AT MORNING PRAYER.
After the Third Collect.

23 WORD of GOD, Eternal SON,
From Thy Throne by pity won,
Let us at Thy cradle kneel,
And Thy infant sorrows feel.

Holy Babe, the sinner's woe

Guiltless Thou art doom'd to know;
Sobs, that from Thy cradle rise,
Tell before of dying cries.

Thou art poor, that we may be
Rich in Thy deep poverty;
Thou art weeping, and Thy grief
Flows, that we may find relief.

Thou art wrapt in garments mean,
Lying in a cave unclean;

Man is proud, the Only Great
Scorneth not the lowliest state.

JESU, Thee the FATHER gave,
Such His love, the earth to save ;
Ransom'd at so dear a cost,
Let us not, O LORD, be lost.

Offspring of the holy Maid,
Endless praise to Thee be paid;
Equal praise, O FATHER, be,
With the SPIRIT, paid to Thee. Amen.

AT EVENING PRAYER.
After the Third Collect.

24 In stature grows the Child Divine,
With death before His eyes,

A Lamb unblemish'd, chaste, benign,
Prepar'd for sacrifice,

The Son of GOD His glory hides,
With parents mean and poor;
And He, Who made the heav'ns, abides
In dwelling-place obscure.

Those mighty Hands, That stay the sky,
No earthly toil refuse,

And He, Who set the stars on high,
An humble trade pursues.

He, before Whom the angels stand,
At Whose behest they fly,/

Now yields Himself to man's command,
And lays His glory by.

TO GOD the SON, Who left His Throne,

Lost sinners to restore,

TO FATHER, SPIRIT, Three in One,

Be glory evermore.

Amen.

Second Sunday after Epiphany.

AT MORNING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

25 SWIFT as shadows of the night
Haste before the morning's light,-
Powers of darkness, quickly fly!
See the Day-Spring from on high!
To Thy Light, Celestial King,
Guileless hearts O may we bring;
Humbly we implore Thy Grace,
Hide not, LORD, from us Thy Face.
Many stains our souls defile,
Many snares to sin beguile,
Much we need Thy Light Divine,
Light of angels, on us shine.

Glory be to GoD on high,

FATHER, Thee we magnify;
Equally the Son adore,

And the SPIRIT, evermore. Amen.

AT EVENING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

26 HE dwells on earth, along His path Behold a heav'nly ray;

But Israel's race, in scorn and wrath,
Is turn'd from Him away.
