BEFORE THE SERMON.

Hymn 9," Hark, the glad sound, &c."

AFTER THE SERMON.

145 0 THOU, to Whose All-seeing Eye Earth's myst'ries all are clear, Who bright as noon-day canst descry What we deem darkest here,Make us in lowly faith rejoice

With her, who, on this day,

First heard the Angel's wondrous voice,
And heard but to obey.

For, though on duty's narrow path
Dark clouds awhile may rest,
One light the weary spirit hath,-

[ocr errors]

To know "Thy way is best,'
And say, "Whate'er betide, yet still
"Behold thy servant, LORD;"
"Be it to me, through good and ill,
According to thy word." Amen.

St. Mark's Day.

AT MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER.
After the Third Collect.

146 HERALDS of CHRIST! from age to age
Proclaiming, through the Gospel-page,
In words that glow, the wondrous plan
Of Love Divine to sinful man!-
The myst❜ries which, beneath the law,
The saints of old but dimly saw,
Have ye unveil'd before our sight,
In the full blaze of Gospel light.
The suff'rings borne, the lessons taught,
The mighty works by JESUS wrought,
Have ye rehears'd, as GoD decreed,
That ages yet unborn might read.
Though variously each record flows,
In all alike One SPIRIT glows;
O may that SPIRIT still be giv'n,
To light us in our path to Heav'n.
All praise to GOD the FATHER sing,
All praise to CHRIST, our Heav'nly KING;
All praise, O HOLY GHOST, to Thee.
For ever and for ever be.

Amen.

BEFORE THE SERMON.

147 JUDEA's desert heard a sound
Of one that cried aloud;
They flock'd the holy John around,
With sin and sadness bow'd.
Lo! 'mid that guilty company,
A sinless LAMB drew near,
His Blood alone that crowd can free
From guilt, and shame, and fear.
Before the SUN, a taper dim,-

John stands and meekly pleads,
Nor pours the hallowing wave,—of Him
The Baptist washing needs.

But to obey His GOD 'tis meet,
Though He Himself depress,
Prepar'd all fulness to complete,
Perfect in righteousness.
Confessor and great Harbinger!-
THOU Baptist of the wave;
The BAPTIST HE of Living Fire,
The secret soul to lave.

To Him Who wash'd us with His Blood,

As hath been heretofore,

TO FATHER, and to SPIRIT GOOD,

Be glory evermore.

Amen.

AFTER THE SERMON.

148 THE Voice of one that cries Along the wilds untrod!"Prepare ye, in the wilderness, "A highway for our GoD. "Be every valley rais'd, "And every hill made low; "The crooked straight, the rugged plain, "For GOD hath will'd it so.

"The Glory of the LORD

"To all men shall appear;

"His Word shall sound throughout the world,
"And every nation hear.

"Man's glory is a flower
"The flesh of man is grass:

"The promise of our God alone

"Is sure and ever was.

Amen.
