AT EVENING PRAYER.

After the Third Collect.

ON Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry
Announces that the LORD is nigh:
Come, then, and hearken, for He brings
Glad tidings of the King of kings.

O cleans'd be every Christian breast,
And furnish'd for so great a Guest!
Let each a loving heart prepare,
For CHRIST to come and enter there.

For Thy dear Presence, LORD, imparts
Light, Life, and Gladness to our hearts :-
Of Thee bereft, our souls decay,

And fade, like earth-born flowers, away.

Come, Gracious LORD, Thyself bestow
Upon Thy blighted realm below:
Ev'n now upon its darkness shine,
And fill with Light and Life Divine,

To Him, Who left His Throne in Heav'n
Mankind to save, all praise be giv'n:
Like praise to GOD the FATHER be,
And HOLY SPIRIT, One and Three. Amen.

BEFORE THE HOLY COMMUNION.

Hymn 7, "On Jordan's bank, &c." (as above).

BEFORE THE SERMON.

8 HOSANNA to the living LORD;

Hosanna to th' Incarnate WORD!
TO CHRIST, CREATOR, SAVIOUR, KING,
Let heav'n and earth Hosanna sing.

Hosanna, Lord! Thine angels cry,
Hosanna, Lord! Thy saints reply;
Above, beneath us, and around,
The dead and living swell the sound.

O SAVIOUR, with protecting care,
Abide in this Thy House of prayer,
Where we Thy parting promise claim,
Assembled in Thy sacred Name!

But, chiefest, in our cleansed breast,
O JESU, bid Thy SPIRIT rest,
And make our inmost soul to be
A temple pure, and worthy Thee.

So, in the last and dreadful day,
When heav'n and earth shall melt away,
Thy flock, redeem'd from sinful stain,
Shall swell the sound of praise again.

All praise to GOD the FATHER Sing,
All praise to CHRIST, Our Heav'nly King;
All praise, O HOLY GHOST, to Thee,
For ever and for ever be. Amen.

AFTER THE SERMON.

Hymn 7, "On Jordan's bank, &c."
(See page 8.)

BEFORE THE SERMON.

HARK, the glad sound! the Saviour comes,—
The Saviour promis'd long;
Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.

He comes, the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held ;-

The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes, from thickest films of vice
To clear the inward sight,

And on the darkness of the blind
To pour celestial light.

He comes, the broken hearts to bind,
The bleeding souls to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace
To bless the humble poor.

Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace!
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

And earth with heav'n shall join, to sing
The glories of Thy Name. Amen.

AFTER THE SERMON.

10[AND now, with shades of night opprest,
When weary limbs are laid to rest,
The faithful soul still wakes and weeps,
And unto Thee her vigil keeps.]*

Health of the World, the FATHER'S WORD,
By Whom our untold prayers are heard,
Desire of Nations, hear our sighs,

And raise us from our miseries.

Why do Thy wheels so long delay?
Come Thou and cast our chains away;
And ope the heav'nly doors again,
Which Adam's crime hath clos'd amain.

Praise to the SON, Who cometh down,
To make lost man again His own;
Praise be, throughout the days of Heav'n,
TO FATHER and to SPIRIT giv'n! Amen.

*This verse is to be used only at a late Evening Service ;-at other times, to be omitted.
