Thy power conveys our blessings down
From God, the Father, and the Son.
2 Enlightened by Thy heavenly ray,
Our shades and darkness turn to day;
Thine inward teachings make us know,
Our danger and our refuge too.

3 Thy power and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin ;
All our imperious lusts subdue,

And form our wretched hearts anew.

4 The troubled conscience knows Thy voice;
Thy cheering words awake our joys;
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

Isaac Watts, 1709.

177 COME, O Creator-Spirit blest!

And in our souls take up Thy rest ;
Come, with Thy grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

2 Great Comforter! to Thee we cry ;
O highest gift of God most high!
O Fount of life! O Fire of love!
And sweet anointing from above!

3 Kindle our senses from above,

And make our hearts o'erflow with love;
With patience firm, and virtue high,
The weakness of our flesh supply.

4 Far from us drive the foe we dread,
And grant us Thy true peace instead ;

So shall we not, with Thee for guide,

Turn from the path of life aside.

Veni Creator Spiritus. Translated by E. Caswall

"OME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

178 CON

My sinful maladies remove;

Be Thou my light, be Thou my Guide,
O'er every thought and step preside.

2 The light of truth to me display,

That I may know and choose my way;
Plant holy fear within mine heart,
That I from God may ne'er depart.

3 Conduct me safe, conduct me far
From every sin and hurtful snare ;
Lead me to God, my final Rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest.

4 Lead me to Christ, the Living Way,
Nor let me from His pastures stray;
Lead me to heaven, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

5 Lead me to holiness, the road

That I must take to dwell with God;
Lead to Thy Word, that rules must give,
And sure directions how to live.

6 Thus I, conducted still by Thee,
Of God a child beloved shall be,
Here to His family pertain,
Hereafter with Him ever reign.

Simon Browne, 1720.

'OME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

COME,

With all Thy quickening powers,

Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 Look, how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys!
Our souls can neither fly nor go
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs;
In vain we strive to rise:

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Dear Lord, and shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate?

Our love so faint, so cold to Thee,
And Thine to us so great!

5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all Thy quickening powers!
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

Isaac Watts, 1709.

LEST Comforter Divine!

Let rays of heavenly love

Amidst our gloom and darkness shine,

And guide our souls above.

2 Draw, with Thy still small voice,
From every sinful way;

And bid the mourning saint rejoice,
Though earthly joys decay.

3 By Thine inspiring breath

Make every cloud of care,
And e'en the gloomy vale of death,
A smile of glory wear.

4 O fill Thou every heart
With love to all our race!
Great Comforter! to us impart

These blessings of Thy grace.

Anon.

OME, Holy Spirit, come,

181 Co

Let Thy bright beams arise,

Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.

2 Revive our drooping faith,

Our doubts and fears remove,

And kindle in our breasts the flame

Of never-dying love.

3 Convince us of our sin,

Then lead to Jesus' blood,

And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.

4 Show us that loving Man
That rules the courts of bliss,
The Lord of hosts, the Mighty God,
The Eternal Prince of Peace.

5 'Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,

To sanctify the soul,

[blocks in formation]

6 Dwell therefore in our hearts,

Our minds from bondage free;

Then we shall know, and praise, and love
The Father, Son, and Thee!

Joseph Hart, 1759.

OLY GHOST, with light divine,
Shine upon this heart of mine;
Chase the shades of night away ;
Turn the darkness into day.

2 Holy Ghost, with power divine,
Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;
Long has sin, without control,
Held dominion o'er my soul.

3 Holy Ghost, with joy divine,

Cheer this saddened heart of mine
Bid my many woes depart,

Heal my wounded, bleeding heart.

4 Holy Spirit, all divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down every idol throne,

Reign supreme, and reign alone.

Andrew Reed, 1841.

183 LORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,

As on the day of Pentecost,
Descend in all Thy power.

2 We meet with one accord
In our appointed place,
