I.

THE spring time and the autumn
Revolving, come and go;

The summer and the winter,

The roses and the snow.

II.

And pleasures, too, and sorrows
Are ours by turns in life;
Now peace and sunny gladness;
Now tempest, storm and strife.

III.

Now bitter tears of anguish ;

Now happy smiles of mirth ;

This ever is the portion

Of mortals upon earth.

IV.

But there's a blissful Eden

Where roses always bloom ;

And where no frosts of winter
Send flowerets to the tomb.

V.

There spring and summer's garlands
With autumn's fruits entwine;
And this bright land of promise,
My brother, may be thine.

VI.

Come, then; for thou art welcome; GOD calls thee from above.

Come! Heaven's gates stand open,

And there all 's peace and love.

BEHOLD yon rain-cloud in the heavens looming; Perhaps 'twas nurtured on this mountain's breast, And left its home, where lovely flow'rs were blooming,

And with the wild winds went away in quest Of doubtful good; and now, by grief oppressed, That wand'rer from across the troubled deep Comes back again, sore burdened and distressed, O'er hill and dale, with breaking heart, to sweep, And cast itself upon the mountain's breast, and weep.
