1

Except ye repent, ye shall perish."
LUKE xiii. 5.

IF Jesus Christ was sent,

To save us from our sin,

And kindly teach us to repent,
We should at once begin.

2

"Tis not enough to say,

3

4

"We're sorry and repent,"

Yet still go on from day to day,

Just as we always went.

Repentance is to leave

The sins we loved before,

And shew that we in earnest grieve,
By doing so no more.

Lord, make us thus sincere,
To watch as well as pray:

However small, however dear,
Take all our sins away.

"Unto us a child is born."
ISAIAH ix. 6.

Him shall the tribes of earth obey,

And all the hosts of heaven.

2 His name shall be the Prince of Peace,
For evermore adored;

The Wonderful, the Councillor,
The great and mighty Lord,

3 His power, increasing, still shall spread,
His reign no end shall know!

Justice shall guard His throne above,
And peace abound below.

"Whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he."

PROV. XVI. 20.

OH! happy day, when God's dear Son,

From heaven to earth came down;
Assumed our nature, bore our sin,
To raise us to His throne.

C.M.

Happy day, &c.

2 O! happy day, when first our feet
To Sabbath school were led ;

Where we such kind instructions meet,
And feed on heavenly bread.

Happy day, &c.

3 O! happy day, the Sabbath day, When we Thy people meet;

Within Thy courts to praise and pray,
And worship at Thy feet.

Happy day, &c.

40! happy day, O! glorious day,
When, with the saints above,
We and our teachers join the lay,
To praise redeeming love.

"Press toward the mark."

PHIL. iii. 14.

we journey, hand in hand,

Happy day, &c.

''

Young our hearts and fresh our love;

To the bright and better land,
To our Father's home above.

2 Narrow is the path we tread,
But we fear and faint no more,
By our Elder Brother led

In the steps He trod before.

• Pleasure lures us with her smiles,
Mammon with his glittering hoards,
Fame with promised garlands, while
Christ His shielding grace affords.
4 For enduring joys we look,

Treasures richer far than gold:
Names inscribed in that great Book
Where the deathless are enrolled.
5 Forward, onward, upward, then,
May we press toward the prize;
May we quit ourselves like men,
With the strength that God supplies.

"As the eagle hasteth to the prey."

JOB ix. 26.

SWIFT as an eagle's flight,
When hasting to his prey,

So, Father, in Thy sight,

Our moments pass away:

4-6's. & 2-8's.

Yet not too swift their course shall be,
If they but bear us, Lord, to Thee.

As morning mists, that fly
The footsteps of the light;
As evening clouds, that die
Beneath the touch of night;-

So fly our years-Lord, let them be
As friends, to lead us home to Thee!

Thy mercies past we sing,
The praise is Thine alone;
What future days shall bring
To none but Thee is known:
Yet whatsoe'er our portion be,
Conduct us safe to heaven and Thee.

On life's fast-rushing tide,

What dangers hover near;
Yet, if our Saviour guide,
We shall no shipwreck fear:

But joyful breast the stormy sea,

Till landed safe in heaven with Thee!

"It shall be a jubilee unto you."
LEV. XXV. 10.

HOW bright the morning broke
O'er Čanaan's hallowed ground,
When silver trumpets woke

The slumb'ring echoes round;
And north to south, and hill to sea,
Proclaimed the year of Jubilee.

2 But fairer still the morn

Of that auspicious day,

When Christ the Lord was born,
And in a manger lay;

Revealed to set the captive free,
And bring the world's glad Jubilee.

3 Now, from His blest abode

Above yon starry spheres,

He bends, our Saviour-God,

Our prayer and praise He hears;
He sends His truth to make us free,
And tunes our songs of Jubilee.

4 But oh! what millions lie

475

1

In error's rayless night!

Bright Dayspring from on high,
Shed forth Thy healing light;
Till the wide earth Thy glories see,
And celebrate its Jubilee !

BEAU

"It doth not yet appear."
1 JOHN iii. 2.

EAUTEOUS scenes on earth appear,
Scenes to sight and memory dear,

[merged small][ocr errors]

Mountains, valleys, rivers, streams,
Landscapes bright with sunny beams,
But a better world by far

Is beyond the highest star.

2 Many happy homes are found-
Homes of peace-on British ground;
And our Fatherland we love,
Free and blessed by God above:

But more happy homes by far
Are beyond the highest star.

3 Soul-inspiring is the song
Warbling from a youthful throng,
Sending forth harmonious lays,
To their great Redeemer's praise;
But the sweetest notes by far
Are beyond the highest star.
4 Oh! that here with fervent zeal,
We may do the Saviour's will,
And at length, with ardent love,
Join to swell the choir above;
We shall happier be by far
When beyond the highest star.

"In my Father's house are many mansions."
JOHN xiv. 2.

I

HAVE a home above,

From sin and sorrow free;
A mansion which eternal love
Designed and formed for me.
My Father's gracious hand
Has built this sweet abode;
From everlasting it was planned
My dwelling-place with God.
My Saviour's precious blood
Has made my title sure;

S.M.

He passed through death's dark raging flood,
To make my rest secure.

The Comforter is come,

[ocr errors]

The earnest has been given ;

He leads me onward to the home
Reserved for me in heaven.

Loved ones have gone before,
Whose pilgrim days are done;

I soon shall greet them on that shore
Where partings are unknown.

"Where I am, ye may be also."
JOHN xiv. 3.

AND

ND shall we dwell together,
As children dwell at home,
And every one be happy,
And not a sorrow come?
Dark people from the islands
Far scattered o'er the sea;
Pale men from icy deserts,

Too cold for flower or tree?

2 Yes, all shall dwell together,
Who once were far apart,
All who have served the Saviour
With hand, and tongue, and heart;
Yes, all shall dwell together,
As children dwell at home,
And then we shall be happy,
God's kingdom will be come.

"Clothed in white raiment."
REV. iii. 5.

FOR the robes of whiteness!
O for the tearless eyes!

O for the glorious brightness
Of the unclouded skies!

2 O for the no more weeping,
Within the land of love,
The endless joy of keeping
The bridal feast above!

8 O for the bliss of flying

My risen Lord to meet!
O for the rest of lying

For ever at His feet!

4 O for the hour of seeing
My Saviour face to face!
The hope of ever being

In that sweet meeting-place.

5 Jesus, Thou King of Glory,
I soon shall dwell with Thee;
I soon shall sing the story
Of Thy great love to me.

6 Meanwhile, my thoughts shall enter
E'en now before Thy throne,

That all my love may centre
In Thee, and Thee alone.
