2 How shall Thy servants give Thee rest, Till Zion's mouldering walls Thou raise ?4 Till Thine own power shall stand confest, And make Jerusalem a praise?
3 Look down, O God, with pitying eye, And view the desolation round; See what wide realms in darkness lie, And cast their idols to the ground. 4 Loud let the gospel trumpet blow, And call the nations from afar; Let all the isles their Saviour know, And earth's remotest ends draw near.
5 On all our souls let grace descend,
Like heavenly dew, in copious showers; That we may call our God our Friend,
That we may hail salvation ours.
Rev. Philip Doddridge. (1702-1751.) 1755. ab.
Shall hymns of joy, to God our King, Be sung by slaves in foreign lands? O Salem, our once happy seat, When I of thee forgetful prove, Let then my trembling heart forget The tuneful strings with art to move.
5 If I to mention thee forbear, Eternal silence seize my tongue;
Or if I sing one cheerful air, Till thy deliverance is my song. Tate and Brady. 1696, ab.
"For God is able to graff them in again." Rom. xi. 23.
I O WHY should Israel's sons, once blest, Still roam the scorning world around, Disowned by heaven, by man opprest, Outcasts from Zion's hallowed ground?
2 Lord, visit Thy forsaken race;
2 See human nature sunk in shame; See scandals poured on Jesus' name; The Father wounded through the Son; The world abused, the soul undone. 3 See the short course of vain delight Closing in everlasting night; In flames that no abatement know, Though briny tears for ever flow.
4 My God, I feel the mournful scene; My bowels yearn o'er dying men: And fain my pity would reclaim,
And snatch the firebrands from the flame.
5 But feeble my compassion proves, And can but weep where most it loves; Thy own all-saving arm employ, And turn these drops of grief to joy. Rev. Philip Doddridge. 1755.
In vain they call, in vain they cry, Till Thine almighty aid is nigh.
But if Thy Spirit deign to breathe, Life spreads through all the realms of death; Dry bones obey Thy powerful voice; They move, they waken, they rejoice.
5 So when Thy trumpet's awful sound Shall shake the heav'ns and rend the ground, Dead saints shall from their tombs arise, And spring to life beyond the skies. Rev. Philip Doddridge. 1755.
Hear not the message sent from Thee. 5 By foreign streams no longer roam,
3 Send forth Thy heralds, Lord, to call
The thoughtless young, the hardened old, A scattered, homeless flock, till all Be gathered to Thy peaceful fold.
4 Send them Thy mighty word to speak, Till faith shall dawn, and doubt depart, To awe the bold, to stay the weak,
And bind and heal the broken heart.
5 Then all these wastes, a dreary scene, That make us sadden as we gaze, Shall grow with living waters green, And lift to heaven the voice of praise. William Cullen Bryant. (1794-) 1840.
Nor, weeping, think of Jordan's flood; In every clime behold a home, In every temple see thy God. Rev. James Joyce. (1781-1850.) 1809.
The Church in the Desert. Ps. lxxx.
I GREAT Shepherd of Thine Israel, Who didst between the cherubs dwell, And lead the tribes, Thy chosen sheep, Safe through the desert and the deep;
2 Thy Church is in the desert now: Shine from on high, and guide us through; Turn us to Thee, Thy love restore; We shall be saved, and sigh no more.
3 Hast Thou not planted with Thy hand A lovely vine in this our land? Did not Thy power defend it round, And heavenly dew enrich the ground?
4 How did the spreading branches shoot, And bless the nations with their fruit! But now, O Lord, look down and see Thy mourning vine, that lovely tree. 5 Return, Almighty God, return, Nor let Thy bleeding vineyard mourn: Turn us to Thee, Thy love restore; We shall be saved, and sigh no more.
Rev. Isaac Watts. (1674-1748.) 1719. ab. and alt
SPIR- IT of the living God, In all Thy plenitude of grace,
Where'er the foot of man hath trod,
1067 The Spirit accompanying the Word of God. 1069
2 Give tongues of fire, and hearts of love,
To preach the reconciling word; Give power and unction from above, Whene'er the joyful sound is heard.
3 Be darkness, at Thy coming, light,
Confusion, order in Thy path; Souls without strength inspire with might; Bid mercy triumph over wrath.
4 O Spirit of the Lord, prepare
All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe Thou abroad like morning air, Till hearts of stone begin to beat.
5 Baptize the nations; far and nigh The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Jesus glorify,
Till every kindred call Him Lord.
James Montgomery. (1771-1854.) 1825. ab.
1068 Zion's favored Hour.
I SOVEREIGN of worlds, display Thy power; Be this Thy Zion's favored hour; O bid the morning star arise;
O point the heathen to the skies.
2 Set up Thy throne where Satan reigns, In western wilds and eastern plains; Far let the gospel's sound be known; Make Thou the universe Thine own.
"Awake, awake." Is. li. 9.
1 ARM of the Lord, awake, awake, Put on Thy strength, the nations shake; And let the world, adoring, see Triumphs of mercy wrought by Thee.
2 Say to the heathen from Thy throne, "I am Jehovah, God alone!" Thy voice their idols shall confound, And cast their altars to the ground.
3 No more let human blood be spilt, Vain sacrifice for human guilt; But to each conscience be applied The blood that flowed from Jesus' side. 4 Almighty God, Thy grace proclaim, In every clime, of every name, Till adverse powers before Thee fall, And crown the Saviour, Lord of all. William Shrubsole, Jr. (1759-1829.) 1795. ab.
Prayer for speedy Triumph.
I SOON may the last glad song arise Through all the millions of the skies, That song of triumph, which records That all the earth is now the Lord's.
2 Let thrones, and powers, and kingdoms be Obedient, mighty God, to Thee;
And over land, and stream, and main, Wave Thou the sceptre of Thy reign.
3 Speak, and the world shall hear Thy voice; 3 O that the anthem now might swell,
Speak, and the desert shall rejoice:
Dispel the gloom of heathen night; Bid every nation hail the light.
And host to host the triumph tell, That not one rebel heart remains, But over all the Saviour reigns.
Rev. Ralph Wardlaw. (1779-1853) 1803,
The Majesty of Christ's Kingdom. Ps. xlv.
1 My Saviour and my King, Thy beauties are divine; Thy lips with blessings overflow, And every grace is Thine. Now make Thy glory known; Gird on Thy dreadful sword, And ride in majesty, to spread The conquests of Thy ward..
3 Strike through Thy stubborn foes, Or make their hearts obey;
While justice, meekness, grace and truth, Attend Thy glorious way.
4 Thy laws, O God, are right;
Thy throne shall ever stand; And Thy victorious gospel prove A sceptre in Thy hand.
Rev. Isaac Watts. (1674-1748.) 1719. ab. and sl. alt.
Hebrew Missionaries. Is. lxvi. 19, 20.
I ALMIGHTY God of love,
Set up th' attracting sign,
And summon whom Thou dost approve For messengers divine.
2 From Abrah'm's favored seed
Thy new apostles choose,
In isles and continents to spread The dead-reviving news. We know it must be done,
For God hath spoke the word; All Israel shall their Saviour own, To their first state restored.
Send, the., Thy servants forth
To call the Hebrews home; From west and east, and south and north Let all the wanderers come.
5 With Israel's myriads sealed, Let all the nations meet; And show Thy mystery fulfilled, Thy family complete.
