SECOND POETRY BOOK.
SELECTED AND ARRANGED
CUNNINGHAM GEIKIE, D.D.
The pieces in this Second Poetry Book have been selected with the same care as those in the First Poetry Book, but various features have been added in connection with them which were not suitable to the simpler collection.
They are intended for the more advanced Classes in our Colleges and Schools, and have been chosen, not only with a CONSTANT REGARD TO ATTRACTIVENESS and FITNESS FOR RECITATION, or for LEARNING BY MEMORY, but so as to give a CONNECTED VIEW OF ENGLISH POETRY, from CHAUCER to OUR OWN DAY.
This, it is believed, will be recognized as a very valuable characteristic.
Biographical Notices have been prefixed, to give necessary information respecting each poet.
Notes have been appended EXPLAINING ALL ALLUSIONS, that the scholar may thoroughly understand each piece, and draw from it the historical, personal, or other knowledge it embodies, which otherwise would be overlooked or left unintelligible.
EXPLANATIONS have also been given of DIFFICULT or UNUSUAL WORDS.
The greatest care has been taken to COLLATE THE TEXT of each extract with that of the BEST EDITIONS of each author.
