Lord, have mercy when we lie
On the restless bed, and sigh,-
Sigh for death, yet fear it still,
From the thought of former ill.
When the dim advancing gloom
Tells us that our hour is come;
When is loosed the silver cord,
Then, O then, have mercy, Lord!

Lord, have mercy when we know
First how vain this world below.
When its darker thoughts oppress,
Doubts perplex, and fears distress;
When the earliest gleam is given
Of Thy bright but distant heaven,
Then Thy fostering grace afford—
Then, O then, have mercy, Lord!

"He knoweth the secrets of the heart.”— Ps. xliv. 21.

FATHER of all, who from Thy throne Beholdest all that each man does, Let us in conscious gladness own

Thine eye is always over us.
Let us delight to choose Thy way,
To keep our Saviour in our sight,
To walk as children of the day,

To take the armour of the light.
2

A tender father's earnest eye,

A mother's fond and tearful heart, Image Thy care, and best supply

To us the thought of what Thou art.
