37 NOW when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, "Men, brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them "Reform, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit. 39 For the promise is to you, and to

your children; and to all that are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call." 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation."

:

41 Then those who [gladly] received his words, were baptized and about three thousand souls were added on that day. 42 And they stedfastly continued in the doctrine of the apostles, and in fellowship, and in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every one; and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together, and had all things in common; 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them among all, as every one had need. 46 And stedfastly continuing in the temple every day, with one consent, and breaking bread from house to house, they partook of food with gladness, and singleness of heart; 47 praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord was daily bringing together those, who accepted salvation, into the church.

CH. III. 1 NOW Peter and John went up together into the temple, at the hour of prayer, which was the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man, lame from his birth, was carried; who was laid daily at the gate of the temple, which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of those that entered into the temple: 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to

go into the temple, asked [to receive] alms. 4 Then Peter, with John, having stedfastly fixed his eyes upon him, said, "Look on us." 5 And he gave heed to them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I have not: but such as I have, I give to thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk." 7 And he took him by the right hand, and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ancle-bones were strengthened: 8 and leaping up, he stood and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking, and praising God; 10 and they knew that it was he who used to sit for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with astonishment and amazement at what had befallen him.

11 AND as he held Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch, which is called Solomon's, much astonished.

12 Now Peter observing it, he said to the people, "Ye men of Israel, why wonder ye at this? or why look ye earnestly on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his servant Jesus; whom ye indeed delivered up, and denied [him] in the presence of Pilate, when he had

determined to release him. 14 | all the prophets, from Samuel

and those who follow after, as many as have spoken, have told likewise of these days. 25 Ye are the sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God

away every one of you from his iniquities.'

But ye denied the holy and righteous one; and desired a murderer to be granted to you; 15 and killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; of which we are witnes-made with our fathers, saying, ses. 16 And his name, through to Abraham, And in thine faith therein, hath strengthened offspring all the families of the this man, whom ye see and earth shall be blessed.' 26 Unknow yea, the faith, which to you first, God, having raisis through him, gave him this ed up his servant, hath sent perfect soundness in the pre-him to bless you, by turning sence of you all. 17 And now, brethren, I know that through ignorance ye did it; as did also your rulers. 18 But God hath so fulfilled what he formerly declared by the mouth of all the prophets, That the Christ would suffer death. 19 Reform ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshment shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and he shall send Jesus Christ, that was before appointed for you: 21 whom heaven must receive, until the times of the restoration of all things, concerning which God hath spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets [from the commencement of that age.]

22" Now Moses said [to the fathers], 'The Lord your God will raise up unto you, from your brethren, a prophet like me; to him ye shall hearken in all things, whatsoever he shall speak to you. 23 And it shall come to pass that every one who shall not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.' 24 Yea, and

CH. IV. 1 AND as the apostles were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came suddenly upon them; 2 being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead: 3 and they laid hands on them, and put them in prison until the next day: for it was now evening. 4 (However, many of those who had heard the discourse, believed: and the number of the men was about five thousand).

5 And it came to pass, on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6 and Annas the high-priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the race of the high-priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And having set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?" 8 Then Peter, filled with a holy spirit, said to them, "Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 if

they called them, and commanded [them] not to speak at all, nor teach, in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answering said to them, "Whether it be right, before God, to hearken to you more than to God, judge ye; 20 for we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard."

we be examined this day concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made well;* 10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, but whom God raised from the dead, even by him, this man standeth here before you, 21 So having further threatrestored. 11 This is the stone ened them, they released them; which was despised by you not finding how they might builders; but which is become punish them, on account of the the head of the corner. 12 [Nor people; for all men glorified is there healingt by any other:] God because of that which had for there is no other name un- been done. 22 For the man der heaven given among men, on whom this miracle of healby which we can be healed."ting had been wrought, was more 13 Now observing the free than forty years old. speech of Peter and John, and 23 AND having been releasperceiving that they were un-ed, they went to their own comlearned and common men, they pany, and reported all that the wondered; and they recollect- chief-priests and elders had ed that they had been with Je- said to them. 24 Now, on hearsus. 14 And beholding the man ing this, the company lifted up that had been restored, standing their voice to God, with one with them, they had nothing to consent, and said; "O soveobject. 15 But when they had reign Lord, thou God, who commanded them to withdraw madest heaven, and earth, and out of the council, they confer- the sea, and all things which red amongst themselves, 16 are in them: 25 who by the saying, "What shall we do to mouth of thy servant David these men? for that indeed a sig- hast said, Why did gentiles nal miracle hath been wrought rage, and people imagine vain by them, is manifest to all who things? 26 The kings of the dwell in Jerusalem, and we can- land came up, and the rulers not deny it. 17 But, that it spread gathered themselves together, no further among the people, against the Lord, and against let us strictly threaten them his anointed?' 27 For in truth, that, henceforth, they speak to against thy holy servant Jesus, no man in this name." 18 And whom thou hast anointed, both

the gentiles, and people of Israel, gathered themselves together, in this city; 28 to perform what thy hand and thy counsel had before appointed to be done. 29 And how, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all freedom they may speak thy word; 30 by stretching forth thy hand to heal; and by the doing of signs and wonders through the name of thy holy servant Jesus." 31 And, on their praying, the place where they were assembled together, was shaken; and they were all filled with a holy spirit, and spake the word of God with freedom.

32 AND the multitude of believers were in heart and soul, one: nor did any one say that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and there was great favor towards them all. 34 Nor was any one among them in want: for as many as were possessors of lands, or houses, sold them, and brought the value of the things which were sold, 35 and laid it down at the feet of the apostles: and distribution was made to every one, according as he had need.

36 And Joses, who, by the apostles, was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation) a Levite, and a native of Cyprus, 37 having a field, sold it; and

at the feet of the apostles.

CH. V. 1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 and kept back part of the price, [his] wife also being privy to it; and brought a certain part, and laid it at the feet of the apostles. 3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why hath the adversary filled thy heart to deceive the holy spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 While it remained, was it not thine own? and, after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not only lied unto men, but unto God." 5 And Ananias, on hearing these words, fell down and expired. And great fear came on all those that heard [these things.] 6 and the younger disciples arising, they wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what had been done, came in. 8 And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much." And she said, "Yes, for so much." 9 Then Peter said to her, "How is it that ye have agreed together to try the spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they will carry thee out." 10 Then she immediately fell down at his feet, and expired. And the young men coming in, they found her dead; and, having
