8s & 6s.

1 THE wanderer no more will roam,
The lost one to the fold hath come,
The prodigal is welcomed home,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

2 Though clothed with shame, by sin defiled,
The Father hath embraced his child,
And I am pardoned, reconciled,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

3 It is the Father's joy to bless,
His love provides for me a dress,
A robe of spotless righteousness,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

4 Now shall my famished soul be fed,
A feast of love for me is spread,
I feed upon the children's bread,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

5 Yea, in the fulness of his grace,

He put me in the children's place,
Where I may gaze upon his face,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

6 I cannot half his love express,
Yet, Lord, with joy my lips confess
This blessed portion I possess,
O Lamb of God, in thee!

7 And when I in thy likeness shine,
The glory and the praise be thine,
That everlasting joy is mine,

O Lamb of God, in thee!

PSALM 51.

L. M.

1 SHOW pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive;
Let a repenting rebel live;

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in thee?

2 My crimes, though great, do not surpass
The power and glory of thy grace;
Great God, thy nature hath no bound,
So let thy pardoning love be found.
3 Oh, wash my soul from every sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean;
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences pain mine eyes.

4 My lips with shame my sins confess,
Against thy law, against thy grace;
Lord, should thy judgment grow severe,
I am condemned, but thou art clear.

5 Should sudden vengeance seize my breath,
I must pronounce thee just in death;
And if my soul were sent to hell,
Thy righteous law approves it well.

6 Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hovering round thy
word,

Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair.

1 FATHER! if I may call thee so,
Regard my fearful heart's desire;
Lift up this load of guilty woe,
Nor let me in my sins expire!

2 I tremble, lest the wrath divine,
Which bruises now my sinful soul,
Should bruise this wretched soul of mine
Long as eternal ages roll.

3 I deprecate that death alone,

That endless banishment from thee! Oh, save, and give me to thy Son, Who trembled, wept, and bled for me!

Charles Wesley, 1740.

1 WITH broken heart and contrite sigh,
A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry ;
Thy pardoning grace is rich and free,-
O God, be merciful to me !

2 I smite upon my troubled breast,
With deep and conscious guilt oppressed,
Christ and his cross my only plea;
O God, be merciful to me!

3 Far off I stand with tearful eyes,
Nor dare uplift them to the skies;
But thou dost all my anguish see;
O God, be merciful to me !

4 Nor alms, nor deeds that I have done,
Can for a single sin atone;
To Calvary alone I flee;
O God, be merciful to me!

5 And when, redeemed from sin and hell,
With all the ransomed throng I dwell,
My raptured song shall ever be,
God has been merciful to me!

1 HEAR, gracious God, a sinner's cry,
For I have nowhere else to fly;
My hope, my only hope's in thee;
O God, be merciful to me!

2 To thee I come, a sinner poor,
And wait for mercy at thy door;
Indeed, I've nowhere else to flee;
O God, be merciful to me!

3 To thee I come, a sinner weak,

And scarce know how to pray or speak,
From fear and weakness set me free;
O God, be merciful to me!

4 To thee I come a sinner vile;
Upon me, Lord, vouchsafe to smile!
Mercy alone I make my plea;
O God, be merciful to me!

5 To thee I come, a sinner great,
And well thou knowest all my state;
Yet full forgiveness is with thee;
O God, be merciful to me!

6 To thee I come, a sinner lost,
Nor have I aught wherein to trust;
But where thou art, Lord, I would be ;
O God, be merciful to me!

7 To glory bring me, Lord, at last;
And there, when all my fears are past,
With all the saints I'll then agree,
God has been merciful to me!

PSALM 51.

L. M.

1 0 THOU who hear'st when sinners cry,
Though all my crimes before thee lie,
Behold them not with angry look,
But blot their memory from thy book.
2 Create my nature pure within,
And form my soul averse to sin;
Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart,
Nor hide thy presence from

my

heart.

3 A broken heart, my God, my King,
Is all the sacrifice I bring;

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

4 My soul is humbled in the dust,

And owns thy dreadful sentence just;
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemned to die.

5 Then will I teach the world thy ways; Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace; I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood, And they shall praise a pardoning God. 6 Oh, may thy love inspire my tongue! Salvation shall be all my song;

And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteousness

494.

Isaac Watts, 1719.

L. M.

1 I LEFT the God of truth and light, I left the God who gave me breath, To wander in the wilds of night,

And perish in the snares of death! 2 Sweet was his service, and his yoke Was light and easy to be borne, Through all his bonds of love I broke ; I cast away his gifts with scorn!

3 Heart-broken, friendless, poor, cast down,
Where shall the chief of sinners fly,
Almighty Vengeance! from thy frown,
Eternal Justice! from thy eye?

4 Lo! through the gloom of guilty fears,
My faith discerns a dawn of grace;
The Sun of Righteousness appears
In Jesus' reconciling face!

5 Prostrate before the mercy-seat,
I dare not, if I would, despair;
None ever perished at thy feet,
And I will lie forever there.

James Montgomery, 1809.

1 No more, my God, I boast no more

Of all the duties I have done;

I quit the hopes I held before,
To trust the merits of thy Son.
