O what fates the life of faith may extend. Sol.
You know that there are two eminent states of our life.
1. One is fpiritual, wbich respe&s all the exigencies, varieties, windings, curnings, changes, defe&tions, eclipses, cryals, and hardships of the foul: Whatsoever accidents may befall an holy soul about the heavenly condition, that appertaines to the spiritual Itate ; all the supplies of grace , of strength, of comfort, of assurance, of afostance against temptations, corre&tions, troubles, all enlivements and quicknings of the Spirit about all sorts of duties and services, active or palo five.
2. Another is temporal, which is not onely the terme of oor natural breathings, but also the fundry and manifold oc. currences which befal us in the employments of our life; all the accidents, and interruptions, coffings,cbeckings, contrarieties, either in our bodies, or calling, or wealth, or persons, or children, or servants,or good name,
Bricfty, ihe cemporal state comprehends all whatsoever may weaken; or waft, or distract : Ali or any of our temporalcontentments, delights, de fires, ends; as allo all our temporal fupplements for the being, or well-being of this poore and short life of ours , as health, strength, friends, food
liberty,estate, peace, and quietnesle, &c.

temporal states and , I live by the fairb of the Sonne of God, said Paul in Gal. 2. 2. Speaking of his spiricual ftate.
So chat faich bears up soul and body, and is both for hca. ven and earth: It serves to ferch in the blood of Christ. the redemption by Chrift, pardon of Gone, Gods favour, ali grace and comfort to the soul. And it serves to fetch in allo health co the body,riches to the estate, plenty, peace, friends, what not? When I am sick,I yet trust in God for health, when poor, 1 yee crust on God for lufficiency, when under reproach, I yet trust onGod to clear my innocency,when under discomforts and forsakements,l yet trust on God for favor and countenance: In all my distresses and reproaches, I have yer bis-Word for my Supplies and helps, upon which I reft,and thus I live by faith: lo. far as the promises exiend, so far doch living by faith extend.

1. The particular condicions and exigencies of the soul, by reaSon of which it hach need io live by fairl.
2. The fulsefe and finefse and fidelity of Cbrifl, for the supply. and help of a beleeving soul.
3. The conjunction of both these togeth:r, which is the very living by faith on Chrift.
First, the particular condicions and exigencies of the foul :you must know this, I bat to live by faicla presuppofth two hings on our part, defe&t and insuficiency:
There is something lyes upon os which should not, and we cannot help our selves, arid therefore we go abroad by faith;this is to line upon the market. 1
Now there are manythings whichdy upon our souls.
1. The fense of guili; this is a great matter, it makes the very heart ofc-cimes to cremble; it is an heavy burden when a man finnes againft an holy and juft God, the least of them.provoking and damhable: This is a time of trouble, for a men feesi muchy in debe, and nothing in ftock, he is not able co pay a farthing, alfhar he is or can do, can never answer divine Juftice. 2. The sense of antiglarecemeffeWhy, God requires an holy conformity to his divine will, in heart, and in life, that our nature should be as he requires, and our wayes as he commands, but wben the soulis able actively to reflect on it selfe, and took on God, and then to compare what it is and hathi done, with what it should be, and mould have done ; It is amazed at its own unrighteousnesse, and this is much increased, for it knows that no unrighteous person shall go to heaven; Ic knows that God will nor pronounce unrighteous judgement; He will not acquit a man as righteous who bach noc righccoulneffe, nor shall he ever stand in judgement before him. Now this is another exigence which puts the foul upon the life of faith.
3. The times of defertion, when all the comfortable evidences of the Chriftian Nace are drawn off, as it were, when the Lord confines himselfe and all to his promise: The poor soul hath'no spark of comfort, itlath no glimpse of divine fa. vour , if it can finde God to be his God, and Christ to be its Christ in the promises, well and good, but there is no feeling, nor.handling any sensible tokens. This is another exigence.
4. The cimes of contrariety: when the Sunne fecmes to be darkened, and when mercy seems to be angry, and when fide. lity seems to cast off, when mindfulnesse lecmes forgetful, God seemnes not co regard us, but to fight against us, and Christ who did call to us to come unto him,doch seem to go away from us:
Othis is a strong exigence of the Toale, and if ever, now must it live by faith, *** 5. The time of weaknese: when a man fees that his work is- great, and his ftrengeb" is fmall, ducies many, power little, affections dull, not able to do for Christ, not able to fuffer for Chrift, cannot pray, hear, receive , obey as he mould, as he would. This is also an exigence of the soul wherein ic needs to live by faith on Chrift,
6. The times of corruption : wheni'a mah feels finne afresh, he had thought finne had been dead long ago, and all coniAists had been past, but now he perceives linne to rise like an armed man, and like a flood, even ready to beare down the foule with that hideous infolency, and violence of wicked thoughes and inclinations ; yea, fo great is this

7. The rimes of rempration, which like a crosse winde, beares the ship almost under water: The gaces of hell seems to open themfelves against the toul, and the powers of darknelle fall in upon it with all the cuoning of unbelief, and excitation to bi isphemy to deny God, to Night his Word, to let go our confidence in Chirin, Yo that the poore fqul is almost brought w duft and death by reason of them. For the sense of guile : Why, in this there is that in Chrilt which can take it off: His blood is good payment, and it was shed for sbe remission of sins; He can make perfect peace, and fasisfie to the memort. As the least fione needs his merit, so the g eatest doth not exceed it: If Christ would but offer up his soul for thine , his merits for thy trespasses , bis precious blood for shy bloody, crimes; Why, God will be pa. cified, for his blood is the blood of aronement of reconciliation, of blouring out of peace &c.
2. So for unrighteousneffe; Why,there is that in Cbrift wbich can present che righteous unspoteed, unblameable; which cao present thee glorious wishome poi or wrinkle, as the Apostle speaks Eph.s.
He can finde an ample garment without any rent, an obedience which was perfe&, which God will accept, for which he will justifie thee ; Though thine own righeconnelle ( foc matter of judicial Justification) be as filehy rags.
3. The like may be said in a proportion to all the other exigencies.
