4 FATHER, SON, and SPIRIT, Thou
One JEHOVAH! shed abroad
All Thy grace within me now,
Be my FATHER and my GOD!

WORSHIP the LORD in the beauty

'O of holiness,

Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim; With gold of obedience and incense of lowliness

Kneel and adore Him, the LORD is His Name.

2 Low at His feet lay thy burden of carefulness, High on His heart He will bear it for thee, Comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness,

Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.

3 Fear not to enter His courts in the slenderness Of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine;

Truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, These are the offerings to lay on His shrine.

4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,

He will accept for the Name that is dear; Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearful

ness,

Trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. 5 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness, Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim; With gold of obedience and incense of lowliness,

Kneel and adore Him, the LORD is His Name.

*John Samuel Bewley Monsell, 1811-1875.

BER

EFORE JEHOVAH'S awful throne
Ye nations bow with sacred joy ;
Know that the LORD is GOD alone,
He can create and He destroy.

L.M.

2 His sovereign power, without our aid,
Made us of clay and formed us men;
And when like wandering sheep we strayed,
He brought us to His fold again.

3 We are His people, we His care,

Our souls and all our mortal frame: What lasting honours shall we rear, Almighty Maker, to Thy Name?

4 We'll crowd Thy gates with thankful songs, High as the heavens our voices raise; And earth with her ten thousand tongues Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise.

5 Wide as the world is Thy command, Vast as eternity Thy love,

Firm as a rock Thy truth must stand When rolling years shall cease to move.

Isaac Watts,

1674-1748,

Ό

THOU to Whom in ancient time The lyre of Hebrew bards was strung, Whom kings adored in song sublime And prophets praised with glowing tongue!

2 Not now on Zion's height alone

Thy favoured worshippers may dwell,
Nor where at sultry noon Thy SON
Sat weary by the patriarch's well;
3 From every place below the skies

The grateful song, the fervent prayer,
The incense of the heart, may rise
To heaven and find acceptance there.
4 To Thee shall age with snowy hair,
And strength, and beauty, bend the knee;
And childhood lisp with reverent air
Its praises and its prayers to Thee.

5 O Thou to Whom in ancient time
The lyre of prophet-bards was strung!
To Thee, at last, in every clime

Shall temples rise and praise be sung.

James Pierpont,

1785-1866.

O GOD is here! let us adore,

[ocr errors]

8.6.8.

And own how dreadful is this place;

Let all within us feel His power,

And silent bow before His face;

Who know His power, His grace who prove, Serve Him with awe, with reverence love.

2 Lo GOD is here! Him day and night The united choirs of angels sing; To Him, enthroned above all height,

Heaven's host their noblest praises bring; Disdain not, LORD! our meaner song Who praise Thee with a stammering tongue.

3 Gladly the toys of earth we leave,

Wealth, pleasure, fame, for Thee alone; To Thee our will, soul, flesh, we give ; O take, O seal them for Thine own! Thou art the GOD, Thou art the LORD; Be Thou by all Thy works adored.

4 Father of spirits! may our praise
Thy courts with grateful fragrance fill;
Still may we stand before Thy face;
Still hear and do Thy sovereign will
To Thee may all our thoughts arise,
Ceaseless, accepted, sacrifice.

SING

14I

ING to the LORD a joyful song, Lift up your hearts, your voices raise, To us His gracious gifts belong,

To Him our songs of love and praise; For He is LORD of heaven and earth,

Whom angels serve and saints adore,
The FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST,
To Whom be praise for evermore.

2 For life and love, for rest and food,
For daily help and nightly care,
Sing to the LORD, for He is good,
And praise His Name, for It is fair;
For strength to those who on Him wait,
His truth to prove, His will to do,
Praise ye our GOD, for He is great,
Trust in His Name, for It is true.

3 For life below with all its bliss,

And for that life more pure and high,
That inner life, which over this

Shall ever shine, and never die;
Sing to the LORD of heaven and earth,
Whom angels serve and saints adore,
The FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST,
To Whom be praise for evermore.
