The president, Lieut.-Gov. J. M. Bingham, declared the senate open and ready for business.

On motion of Senator Thomas,

The senate proceeded to the election of chief clerk.
Senator Burrows nominated Charles E. Bross.

The roll being called, the following senators voted for Charles E. Bross:

Senators Anderson, Blackstone, Burrows, Crosby, Ellis, Fifield, Finkelnburg, Griffin, Hamilton, Kelly, McGrew, McKeeby, Phillips, Price, Quarles, Richardson, Ryland, Scott, Simpson, Sutherland, Thomas, Wiley, Wing and Woodman - 24.

The following senators voted for Michael Bohan:

Senators Carter, Delaney, Hunt, Kusel, Paul, Rankin, Smith and Weaver 8.

Absent, Senator Van Schaick.

Charles E. Bross having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected chief clerk, whereupon he took the oath of office, which was administered by the president.

On motion of Senator Sutherland,

The senate proceeded to the election of a sergeant-at-arms.
Senator Quarles presented the name of W. W. Baker.

The roll being called, the following senators voted for W. W. Baker:

Senators Blackstone, Burrows, Crosby, Ellis, Fifield, Finkelnburg, Griffin, Hamilton, Kelly, McGrew, McKeeby, Phillips, Price, Quarles, Richardson, Ryland, Scott, Simpson, Sutherland, Thomas, Wiley, Wing and Woodman-23.

The following senators voted for Capt. F. Jaerling:

Senators Anderson, Carter, Delaney, Hunt, Kusel, Paul, Rankin, Smith and Weaver -9.

W. W. Baker having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected as sergeant at-arms, whereupon he took the oath of office, which was administered by the president.

On motion of Senator Kelly,

The senate proceeded to the election of a president pro tem.
Senator Griffin presented the name of Thomas B. Scott.

The roll being called, the following senators voted for Thomas B. Scott:

Senators Blackstone, Burrows, Crosby, Ellis, Fifield, Finkelnburg, Griffin, Hamilton, Kelly, McGrew, McKeeby, Phillips, Price, Quarles, Richardson, Ryland, Simpson, Sutherland, Thomas, Wiley, Wing and Woodman - 22.

The following senators voting for George H. Paul:

Senator Anderson, Carter, Delaney, Hunt, Kusel, Rankin, Scott, Smith and Weaver -9.

Senator Paul voting for Senator Anderson.

Senator Scott having received a majority of all the votes cast, Senators Sutherland and Anderson were appointed a committee to escort him to the chair.

On assuming which, he said: SENATORS It is extremely difficult for me to express my feelings to you for the honor conferred on me in electing me to preside over you in the absence of Lt.-Gov. Bingham. I feel that there are many senators better qualified for the position; but, with the courtesy heretofore extended to me while in the chair, I shall feel that I can rely on the same being continued during this session. Hoping that the session will be harmonious, profitable, and short, I again thank you for the honor conferred.

Resolved, That the superintendent of public property be and he hereby is requested to furnish each member of the senate with one copy of the revised statutes, one copy of the laws of 1879 and of the laws of 1880, and one copy of the senate journal and of the assembly journal for 1880.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSEMBLY.

Mr. PRESIDENT:

I am directed to inform you that the assembly has organized, by the election of Ira B. Bradford, speaker; J. E. Eldred, chief clerk, and Geo. W. Church, sergeant-at-arms, and is now ready to proceed to business.

And has adopted, and asks the concurrence of the assembly in, Jt. Res. No. 1 A., appointing a committee to wait upon the governor, and have appointed Messrs. Ware, Kingston and Ringle, as the members on part of the assembly.

ASSEMBLY MESSAGE CONSIDERED.

Jt. Res. No. 1, A., was concurred in, and Senators Finkelnburg and Kusel appointed on the part of the senate.
