II. 3.

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Be glory in the highest giv'n,
By all in earth, and all in heav'n,
As was through ages heretofore,
Is now, and shall be evermore.

II. 4.

To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit, ever bless'd,
Eternal Three in One,
All worship be address'd,
As heretofore

It was, is now,
And shall be so

For evermore.

II. 5.

To God the Father, and to God the Son,

To God the Holy Spirit, Three in One,

Be praise from all on earth and all in heav'n,

As was, and is, and ever shall be giv'n.

II. 6.

Eternal praise be given,
And songs of highest worth,
By all the hosts of heaven,
And all the saints on earth,
To God, supreme confessed,
To Christ, his only Son,
And to the Spirit blessed,
Eternal Three in One.

II. 7.

To Father, Son, and Spirit bless'd,
Supreme o'er earth and heaven,
Eternal Three in One confess'd,
Be highest glory given,
As was through ages heretofore,
Is now, and shall be evermore,
By all in earth and heaven.

II. 8.

By all on earth and all in heav'n,
Be everlasting glory giv'n,

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit; equal Three
In undivided Unity,

Ere time had yet its course begun:
As was, and is, be highest praise,
As still shall be through endless days.

CLASS ΙΠ.

III. 1.

Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, Three in One!
Glory, as of old, to thee,
Now, and evermore shall be!

III. 2.

Praise the name of God most high,
Praise him all below the sky,
Praise him all ye heav'nly host,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost;
As through countless ages past,
Evermore his praise shall last.

III. 3.

Praise the Father, earth and heaven, Praise the Son, the Spirit praise,

As it was, and is, be given

Glory through eternal days.

III. 4.

To the Father, thron'd in heaven,
To the Saviour, Christ, his Son,
To the Spirit, praise be given,
Everlasting Three in One:

As of old, the Trinity
Still is worshipp'd, still shall be.

III. 5.

Great Jehovah! we adore thee,
God the Father, God the Son,
God the Spirit, join'd in glory
On the same eternal throne:
Endless praises

To Jehovah, Three in One.

CLASS IV.

IV. I.

By angels in heav'n
Of ev'ry degree,
And saints upon earth,

All praise be address'd;
To God in three persons,
One God ever bless'd,
As it has been, now is,
And ever shall be.

IV. 2.

All praise to the Father, the Son,
And Spirit, thrice holy and bless'd,
Th' eternal, supreme Three in One,
Was, is, and shall still be address'd.

IV. 3.

All praise to the Father, all praise to the Son,
All praise to the Spirit, thrice bless'd,
The holy, eternal, supreme Three in One,
Was, is, and shall still be address'd.

IV. 4.

O Father Almighty, to thee be address'd,
With Christ and the Spirit, one God ever bless'd,
All glory and worship from earth and from heav'n,
As was, and is now, and shall ever be giv'n.

IV. 5.

All glory and praise to the Father be given,
The Son and the Spirit from earth and from heaven

As was, and is now, be supreme adoration,

As ever shall be, to the God of salvation.

For Hymns 145 and 185.

To the Father, to the Son,
And Spirit ever bless'd,
Everlasting Three in One,
All worship be address'd:
Praise from all above, below,
As throughout the ages past,
Now is given, and shall be so
While endless ages last.

When used to Hymn 185, in line 6, read,
As was throughout the ages past.

Come, let us adore him, come, bow at his feet,
O give him the glory, the praise that is meet;
Let joyful hosannas unceasing arise,
And join the full chorus that gladdens the skies.

Whenever the Hymns are used at the celebration of divine service, a certain portion or portions of the Psalms of David in metre shell also be sung.

Almighty Father! bless the word,

23 Hark! the herald angels sing,

25

Awake, ye saints, awake,

Begin, my soul, the exalted lay,

Almighty Lord! before thy throne,
Although the vine its fruits deny
And are we now brought near to God,
And wilt thou, O eternal God,
And will the Judge descend?
Another six days' work is done,
Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat,
Arise, my soul! with rapture rise!
As panting in the sultry beam,

As when the weary trav'ller gains,
As o'er the past my memory strays,
As the sweet flow'r that scents the morn,

Awake, my soul, and with the sun,

Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve,

Before Jehovah's awful throne

101 He dies! the friend of sinners dies!
20 He's come! let every knee be bent,
70 Heirs of unending life,

87 High on the bending willows hung,
83 How beauteous are their feet

98 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the
29 Lord,

67 How long shall earth's alluring toys
86 How helpless guilty nature lies,

95 How oft, alas! this wretched heart

19 How short the race our friend has run,

81 How wondrous and great

5 I love thy kingdom, Lord,

43 Hasten, sinner, to be wise;

Be joyful in God, all ye lands of the earth,

80 In loud exalted strains,

Be still my heart! these anxious cares,

82 Inspirer and hearer of prayer,

91

Bless'd be thou, the God of Israel,

107 I would not live alway; I ask not to stay 98

Bless'd is the man whose soft'ning heart

Bless'd is the tie that binds

Father of mercies! in thy word
Father of all, whose love profound,
Father of mercies! bow thine ear,
Father, to thee, my soul I lift,
Father, whate'er of earthly bliss
Few are thy days, and full of wo,
Fountain of mercy, God of love,

From all that dwell below the skies,
From Greenland's icy mountains,
From whence these direful omens round
Glory to thee, my God, this night,
Glory to the Father give,

God moves in a mysterious way,
God of the seas! thine awful voice
God of our Fathers! by whose hand
Go forth ye heralds, in my name
"Go preach my gospel," saith the Lord,
Grace! 'tis a charming sound!

Great first of beings! mighty Lord,
Great God. this sacred day of thine,
Great God! to thee my evening song,
Great God! what do I see and hear?

Lord! for the just thou dost provide,

104 Lord, how delightful 'tis to see
77 Lord, my God, I long to know,
74 Lord of life, all praise excelling,
57 Lord! unafflicted, undismay'd,
115 Lo! what a cloud of witnesses,
44 Lord, with glowing heart I'd praise

7

73 Mercy, descending from above,

My God, and is thy table spread?

22 My God, permit me not to be

3 My God, since thou hast rais'd me up,
42 My grateful soul, for ever praise,
53 My op'ning eyes with rapture see
14 My Saviour hanging on the tree,
82 Not to the terrors of the Lord,

99 Now from the altar of our hearts,
45 Now may the God of grace and pow'r
54 Now the shades of night are gone;
56 O'er mountain tops the mount of God
36 O happy day, that stays my choice

Praise to God, immortal praise,
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire,
Rich are the joys which cannot die,
Rise, crown'd with light, inperial
Salem rise!

Rise, my soul, and stretch thy wings,
Rise, O my soul, the hours review,
Rock of ages! cleft for me,

Salvation doth to God belong,
Salvation! O the joyful sound,
Saviour, source of every blessing,
Saviour, when in dust, to thee

Saviour! when night involves the skies,
Saviour! who thy flock art feeding,
See, in the vineyard of the Lord,
Seek, my soul, the narrow gate,
Should nature's charms, to please the

eye,

Shout the glad tidings, exultingly sing;
Since Christ our Passover is slain,
Since I've known a Saviour's name,
Sing, my soul, his wondrous love,
Sinner! rouse thee from thy sleep,
Sinners, turn, why will ye die ?
Softly now the light of day
Soldiers of Christ arise,

Songs of praise the angels sang;
Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay,
Sov'reign Ruler of the skies,
The day is past and gone;

The gentle Saviour calls

The God of Abraham praise,

The God of life, whose constant care
The Lord my pasture shall prepare,

The Lord will happiness divine,
The mighty flood that rolls

[blocks in formation]

44 This is the day the Lord hath made,
70 Thou art the way; to thee alone
61 Though I should seek to wash me clean

109

Thou, God, all glory, honour, power,
30 Thus speaks the High and Lofty One;
76 Time hastens on: ye longing saints
72 'Tis finish'd; so the Saviou. cried;

102 Welcome, sweet day of rest,

When all thy mercies, O my God,
105 When dangers, woes, or death are nigh,
26 When gath'ring clouds around I view,
37 Whene'er the angry passions rise,
97 When I can read my title clear
15 When I survey the wondrous cross,
111 When Jesus left his heavenly throne,
67 When, Lord, to this our Western land,
90 When, rising from the bed of death,
47 When, streaming from the eastern skies, 85
81 When those we love are snatch'd away, 66
72 When through the torn sail the wild
