To Thee I'll midnight anthems sing,
And all my vows perform.

5 Why restless, why cast down, my soul?
Hope still, and thou shall sing
The praise of Him who is thy God,
Thy health's eternal spring.

87 IN the hour of my distress

7's.

169.

When temptations me oppress,
And when I my sins confess,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me!

2 When I lie upon my bed,
Sick in heart and sick in head,
And with doubts disquieted,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me!
3 When the tempter me persu'th
With the sins of all my youth,
And condemns me with untruth,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me!
4 When the judgment is reveal'd
And that open'd which is seal'd,
When to Thee I have appeal'd,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me!

The House of God.

88 LORD of the worlds above,

P.M.

140.

How pleasant and how fair,

The dwellings of Thy love,
Thine earthly temples are!
To Thine abode
My heart aspires,
With warm desires
To see my God.

2 O happy souls that pray
Where God appoints to hear!

O happy men that pay

Their constant service there!

89

8'9.

235.

They praise Thee still,
And happy they
That love the way

To Zion's hill.

3 They go from strength to strength,
Thro' this dark vale of tears,
'Till each arrives at length,
'Till each in heav'n appears:
O glorious seat,
When God our King
Shall hither bring
Our willing feet.

4 God is our sun and shield,
Our light and our defence;
With gifts our hands are fill'd,
We draw our blessings thence:
He shall bestow

On Jacob's race
Peculiar grace
And glory too.

STILL, in a world of sin and pain,

Far from our home we meet again;
Dreary and long our course may be,
But oh, our God, it leads to Thee!
Thou art the light by which we roam,
Thou art our everlasting home.
2 Thy hand is still around to bless,
Thou dost not leave us comfortless;
Earth and its pain we still may feel,
But Thou art ever near to heal:
Still as our day our strength shall be,
For all our cares are borne by Thee.
3 Still, as time's changing current rolls,
Thy comforts, Lord, delight our souls,
Thy mighty arm to smooth our way,
Thy light to turn our night to-day:

93.

Onward with firmer steps we roam,
On to our everlasting home.

JESUS! where'er Thy people meet,
There they behold Thy mercy seat;
Where'er they seek Thee Thou art found,
And ev'ry place is hallow'd ground.
2 Great Shepherd of the chosen few,
Thy former mercies here renew;
Here to our waiting hearts proclaim
The glories of Thy saving name.
3 Here may we prove the pow'r of pray'r,
To strengthen faith and sweeten care,
To teach our faint desires to rise,
And bring all heav'n before our eyes.
4 Lord! we are weak, but Thou art near,
Nor short Thine arm, nor deaf Thine ear;
O rend the heav'ns, come quickly down,
And make our sinful hearts Thine own!

91. HOSANNA, to the Living Lord!

L.M.

88.

Hosanna, to the Incarnate Word!
To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King,
Let earth, let heaven, Hosanna sing.
2 Hosanna, Lord! Thine angels cry:
Hosanna, Lord! Thy saints reply:
Above, beneath us, all around,
The dead, the living, swell the sound.
3 O Saviour, with protecting care,
Return to this Thy house of prayer;
Assembled in Thy sacred name,
Here we Thy parting promise claim.
4 But chiefest, in our cleansed breast,
Eternal! bid Thy Spirit rest;
And make our secret soul to be
A temple pure, and worthy Thee.

5 So, in the last and dreadful day,

66

When earth and heaven shall melt away,
Thy flock, redeemed from sinful stain,
Shall swell the sound of praise again.

WHERE two or three together meet,
My love and mercy to repeat,

And tell what I have done;

There will I be," saith God," to bless,
And ev'ry burden'd soul redress

Who worships at My throne."

2 Make one in this assembly, Lord,

Speak to each heart some healing word,
To set the spirit free;
Impart a full celestial shower,

And grant that we may spend an hour
In fellowship with Thee.

3 Guilt from the troubled soul remove,
Constrain the heart by love to love,
Relieve from slavish fear;

Then though in tents of sin we groan,
We'll sing like those around the throne,
Till Thou shalt bring us there.

93 APPROACH, my soul, the mercy seat, Where Jesus answers pray'r;

C.M.

[blocks in formation]

Still humbly bow before His feet
For none can perish there.

2 Thy promise is my only plea,
With this I venture nigh;

Thou callest wearied souls to Thee,
And such, O Lord, am I.

3 Laden with grief, and guilt and sin,
By Satan's pow'r depress'd,

By war without, and fears within,
I come to Thee for rest.

4 Be Thou my shield and hiding place,
That, shelter'd near Thy side,

I may my fierce accuser face,

And tell Him" Christ has died."
5 Oh, wondrous love! to bleed and die,
To bear the cross and shame,
That guilty sinners, such as I,
Might plead Thy gracious name.

94 COME my soul, thy suit prepare,

7's.

115.

Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He Himself has bid thee pray,
Therefore will not turn away.
2 Thou art coming to a King:
Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and pow'r are such,
None can ever ask too much.
3 Lord I come to Thee for rest,
Take possession of my breast;
There Thy blood bought right maintain,
And without a rival reign.

4 While I am a pilgrim here,
Let Thy love my spirit cheer;
As my guide, my guard, my friend,
Lead me to my journey's end.
5 Shew me what I have to do,
Ev'ry hour my strength renew ;
Let me live a life of faith,
Let me die Thy people's death.

The Christian Life.

95 WHATE'ER my God ordains is right; His will is ever just;

P.M.

195.

Howe'er He orders now my cause,
I will be still and trust.

He is my God; though dark my road,
He holds me that I shall not fall,
Therefore to Him I leave it all.
