5 My wounds stink and are corrupt

Because of my foolishness.

6 I am 'troubled; I am bowed down greatly;

I go mourning all the day long.

7 For my loins are filled with fa loathsome disease; And there is no soundness in my flesh.

8 I am feeble and sore broken:

9

I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

LORD, all my desire is before thee;

And my groaning is not hid from thee.

10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me:

As for the light of mine eyes, it also is 'gone from me. 11 My lovers and my friends i stand aloof from my 'sore; And my 'kinsmen stand afar off.

12 They also that seek after my life 'lay snares for me; And they that seek my hurt speak mischievous

things,

m

And imagine deceits all the day long.

13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not;

And I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. 14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, And in whose mouth are no reproofs. 15 For in thee, O LORD! do I hope: Thou wilt hear, O LORD my God!

16 For I said, "Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me:"

When my Pfoot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

17 For I am ready to halt,

And my sorrow is continually before me.

my sin.

19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong;

And they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

20 They also that render evil for good are mine adver

saries;

Because I follow the thing that good is.

21 Forsake me not, O LORD!

O my God, be not far from me!

22 Make haste "to help me, O LORD "my salvation!

David's care of his thoughts, 1-3; the consideration of the brevity and vanity of life, 4-6, the reverence of God's judgments, 7-9, and prayer, are his helps to a patient faith, 10-13.

To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1 I said, I will a take heed to my ways,
That I sin not with my tongue:

I will keep 'my mouth with a bridle,
While the wicked is before me.

2 I was dumb with silence,

I held my peace, even from good;
And my sorrow was 'stirred.

3 My heart was hot within me,

C

While I was musing the fire burned:

Then spake I with my tongue,

LORD, make me to know mine end,

4

Verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah!

Surely every man walketh in 'a vain show:

Surely they are disquieted in vain:

He cheapeth up riches-and knoweth not who shall gather them.

7 And now, LORD, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: Make me not the reproach of the foolish. 9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; Because thou didst it.

10 Remove thy stroke h

I am consumed by the 'blow of thy hand.

11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity,

12

Thou makest 'his beauty to consume away like a moth: Surely every man is vanity. Selah!

Hear my prayer, O LORD! and give ear unto my cry;

Hold not thy peace at my tears:

For I am a stranger with thee,

And a sojourner, kas all my fathers were. 13 O1spare me, that I may recover strength, Before I go hence, and m be no more.

PSALM VI

ON OCCASION OF DAVID'S SICKNESS AFTER HIS SIN.

David's complaint in his sickness, 1–7; by faith he triumpheth over his enemies, 8–10.

To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, [or, To the chief Musician on the stringed instruments; [this Psalm to be sung with] an octave or bass accompaniment.] A Psalm of David.

a

1 O LORD! rebuke me not in thine anger,

Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

2 Have mercy upon me, O LORD! for I am weak;
O LORD, 'heal me; for my bones are vexed.
3 My soul is also sore vexed;

But thou, O LORD, how long?

4 Return, O LORD, deliver my soul:

O save me for thy mercies' sake.

5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee:

In the grave who shall give thee thanks?

6 I am weary with my groaning;
'All the night make I my bed to swim;
I water my couch with my tears.

7 Mine deye is consumed because of grief;
It waxeth old because of all mine enemies.

8

e

Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity;

For the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.

9 The LORD hath heard my supplication;

The LORD will receive my prayer.

10 Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: Let them return and be ashamed suddenly.

PSALM XLI.

ON OCCASION OF DAVID'S SICKNESS AFTER HIS SIN.

The reward of those who are merciful to the poor, 1-3; David complaineth of his enemies' treachery, 4-9; he appealeth to God for succour, 10-13.

T To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

1 Blessed is he that considereth 'the poor:
The LORD will deliver him 'in time of trouble.
2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive;
And he shall be blessed upon the earth:

S

And thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his

enemies.

3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing:

Thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

4 I said, "LORD, be merciful unto me:

Heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee."

5 Mine enemies speak evil of me,

"When shall he die, and his name perish?"

C

6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: His heart gathereth iniquity to itself;

When he goeth abroad he telleth it.

7 All that hate me whisper together against me: Against me do they devise 'my hurt.

8 "An evil disease," say they, "cleaveth fast unto him; And now that he lieth he shall rise up no more."

9 Yea, 'mine own familiar friend,

d

(In whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread,) Hath lifted his heel against me.
